steamcommunity.com/workshop/aboutpaidcontent/Many mod creators ask for donations to help fund the work they do. Now Valve is giving them the option to just get paid for it directly. I want to be ambivalent about this but when things like the Unofficial Skyrim patches (practically required if you want your experience to have as few bugs as possible due to the official patches breaking more than they actually fix) start having an enforced price tag on them it's difficult to swallow. EDIT: After a bit of checking I've found that the author of the Unofficial Patches has no plans on monetizing them. So my biggest fear is now a non-issue. What do you guys think about all this?

It's simple enough for me. I just won't pay for them.
There are other places to get mods all over the internet. Even though I have around 22GB worth of mods for Skyrim, not a single one of them came from Steam. If the authors of those mods take their mod and make it Steam exclusive and then make it pay only...oh well. I just won't use it anymore.
I have a feeling though some authors might be shocked to see that their mod suddenly isn't so popular anymore once they stick it behind the paywall heh.

Okay wow. This thread was the first I read about it (thanks btw, I would have been way late on discovering this) so I went to do some looking around. It looks like the internet just exploded. Like really. I've seen some *censored* out there now. This is like the Modpocalypse. The burning and death going around is insane. Especially on Nexus. Isoku and Chesko took some of their mods and put them behind the paywall. Everything and everyone is exploding.
I was thinking about maybe messing around in some GW2 tonight, but I think I might grab some snacks and watch this meltdown happen in all it's glorious nerd filled rage. Amazing.

Too right.
I think we're in for a bit of hilarity with how poorly this is being handled and implemented.
There have already been cases of people trying to sell mods that they didn't make to begin with or were using assets made by other people but didn't have their permission to use.
If the authors of some of the really big core mods like SKSE make a public statement saying they forbid people to monetize their work we're gonna see some tears along with the hilarity.

And so it begins. Chesko uploaded his Art of the Catch mod and then claimed that he had permission from Fore (the author of FNIS) to upload mods that use FNIS. But... Oops. It's fight time.

I'm using Nexus anyway.
As for paying. Some people will try to sell their mods, some won't.
I don't think it's a good idea because mods always had kinda murky copyrights. If you want to make money out of your mods you should be using only your own original assets, free of any complications.
Except many mods are pieced together with other assets from older mods, etc.
So. FNIS is a good exmple. It's used for and required by a lot of mods. It's actually their cornerstone. Now, why people are thinking it's right to charge for their mods when their work would not be possible without FNIS? The same FNIS they were given for free.
The same goes for script extenders for B00blivion, Skyrim or New Vegas. They're free, but show me an in-depth gameplay mod that is not using them. They're basically mandatory. So, what right someone has to charge for their mods when their mod can exist only because of other free mods?
But as I've said, I'm using Nexus, it's better than Steam workshop. And they have donations there and i'm sometimes using it when I really like the mod, but I'm rarely (if ever) looking for mods on Steam.
Valve's really dropping idiot ball with this one. It won't fly.

Looks like someone already ripped all the paid mods and uploaded them to MEGA for free distribution. I won't put the link here for obvious reasons, but damn I just can't stop laughing.

Looks like some mod authors are doing some backtracking to cover their asses. Saying that their mods will only be exclusive to the paid workshop for 30-60 days and then they will release them for free. A sort of paid preview, if you will.
It also looks like any mods using FNIS are safe since Fore isn't having any of it.
I also discovered the break down of earnings off of mods. 25% off each purchase goes to the mod author. 75% goes to Bethesda and Valve, with Beth getting the larger cut. Such lolz.

Just hit the hot files on the front page of Nexus: www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/65034/?If you notice in the pictures, the NPC is sitting on a valve. Delicious. If you can't tell, I'm having way too much fun with this whole situation. The entertainment value here is extremely high.

Not only that but in the legal fine print Valve set up for this it states that modders may not actually SEE any payout until $100 of payout has been accumulated. That means the mod will have to make around $400 before the modder gets that stack of Steam Wallet Cash 25% payout sent to them.

That's insane. Why would any modder even consider doing it under those terms? I sure as hell wouldn't. ------ Update time. Chesko has completely pulled out of the Curated Workshop. i.imgur.com/4a8kCEn.png (Large pic so I linked it.) He was getting hammered by Kotaku and Destructiod. kotaku.com/paid-skyrim-mod-turns-into-a-cluster*censored*-1699913114He then made a full debrief on reddit about it. It's a must read for anyone interested in this situation as a whole. www.reddit.com/r/skyrimmods/comments/33qcaj/the_experiment_has_failed_my_exit_from_the/My favorite part of that? After some digging, it's true. Boom. Darky gets a cut while at the same time he doesn't have to outright support it. I kind of expected it though. I knew he was kind of a scummy dude, what with all those lavish vacations he takes while the Nexus servers struggle to work. I guess he'll get even better vacations now. Now I'm hearing reports of a DDoS attack on the Curated Workshop. This just keeps getting better and better!

This is one reason why I don't play these games. Skyrim is utter trash in it's vanilla form, if it needs mods to make it worth anything, it's not worth playing, I felt the same way about minecraft. It works fine in it's basic form, adding mods to it ruins it. I hated GW2 from the start. The only thing I liked about it was the models, and graphics. The spells are unimpressive, and hardly flashy, the controls are abyssmal, and the GUI is next to the worst I've ever played. I suppose you can just try find people that bought it, and download it off them.

Speaking of getting better and better... Pop-up ads in free versions of mods wanting you to upgrade to the paid versions are now a thing. I never thought I'd ever see the day. Account names removed so I'm not accused of anything dumb.
