Good call on backing that one up, because... ...you seem to have possibly dodged a bullet.

This is going from entertaining to ugly really quick.

Well looks like a cursory look of all the rest of the major mods I use looks okay. Apocalype Magic looks to be staying free so I guess he's going to be getting all the downloads now heh. Only concern I have left at the moment is SkyUI. Tons of mods need MCM from that as a dependency. That one's going to be a mess.

It's already a mess, the SkyUI thing is going to make me wish I was back in the thick of the Katrina aftermath because that was figuratively less messy.

Did some digging on the SkyUI page. We still might be alright. Maybe...
It looks like the 4.X versions have to remain free because it was built with something called TweenLite free version.(I don't know what this is, some programming...program. Or something.) Under that license, they cannot sell the things they make with it. To sell things they make with that, they have to pay the licensing fee of $150 per year or $750 one time. The new 5.0 version is being built without that, which is why they can legally sell it.
So any mod that currently uses the existing version will be fine. Future mods can just be written with the current version as well. But that's where things get weird. Why bother paying for a newer version if all the mods are just going to use the old one? The authors also stated to be keeping the existing one free.
So I don't even know what the point is of making a paid version. Of course they could always change their mind later, which is still a concern. This is all just...just blargh.

Last post from me for the night, I've stayed up waaaay too long sifting through this mess. Have a rather amusing video someone made making fun of all this. I'll check back in the morning and see how much has burned over night.

The point is that almighty dollar. For years the modding scene was seen as a labor of love, because the modders themselves said many times they do this as a labor of love for the community and only ever asked for donations to support their efforts. But then this happened and quite literally overnight we're seeing projects move platforms in the hopes of raking in the dough.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for getting paid for the work you do. I'm just less than thrilled with how many have jumped ship to go exclusively to the Workshop because money got involved. They don't even seem to care they're only going to get a meager 25% of the cut.

Yeah I agree. I too am all for getting paid for your hard work. Just not in the way this has gone down. I've always wanted to donate to the mods that I love the most, but I've just never had the extra cash on hand to do so. I would have tossed some dough at Chesko for sure. I consider Frostfall a must have mod. I can't play Skyrim without it now. I hope he comes back because he really is a talented modder who made one of the best Skyrim mods out there. Maybe I'll be able to throw some cash at him someday for it.
In a little bit better news, Phenderix has changed his mind and is dropping putting his mods into the paid workshop. He's also made his mods Nexus exclusive and won't even be on the free workshop. So it looks like my favorite magic mod is safe. Yay for community pressure! Well, not the death threats mind you. I never agree with that. No one should get those, especially over something like this.

Glad to hear he changed his mind, even if it took a boatload of pressure from the community for that to happen.
In other news, the CEO for Keen Software House is talking about having paid mods be a thing for Space Engineers. A game that's still in Early Access because it's not yet finished.
Paid mods for quite literally unfinished games. Boy howdy.

I wish I could be surprised by that. Pay for beta, then pay for alphas and call it "early access". Now that Valve/Beth opened the doors, we can now have paid mods for paid alphas! And further on down the slope we go. So slippery.
Meanwhile on Nexus, it looks like Darky released a news post about him getting cuts from the mod revenue. I'll admit he makes a few decent points and pledges that the money that comes from it will be used for Nexus maintenance, but in the end he's still making money off it while pretending to disagree with it. He clearly states that he has the option to opt out of it. He just won't do it. I also liked the bit about him boohoo-ing over cancelling his vacation because of this. Like we (the mod community) had anything to do with this. Get mad at Valve/Beth bro. You knew they were doing this.

The next time my vacation plans get cancelled because a game I want comes out I'll be sure to send them an email sternly stating my disappro...ah screw it, I can't finish that with a straight face. What a load of crap.

Exactly what I've been expecting. Very few modders are producing their stuff with 100% their own original assets. People will be jumping this bandwagon happily, but I have some doubts how many of them even realises that when it's commercial they have to pay attention to who actually owns these assets. And modding community always had some problems with merely crediting people for their stuff being reused in other mods, let alone asking for permissions. Dis gonna be reaaallyy good.
