No kidding. I didn't actually think it would be gone so fast, if at all. But looking back at earlier, I kind of had a feeling it would go down like this. On the paid mod front page, they didn't approve any more mods past the launch day mods. They went from 19 down to 17 after Chesko backed out. If you looked at the ones that were submitted but were pending approval, they were all mostly trash/joke mods. Some were obvious like Gaben's Deuce or the Golden Potato mod. Others were just like an iron dagger that had a stat change (2 seconds in CK to edit) or a glass sword that was recolored in MS Paint. There were like maybe 3 serious mods out of 100 of them or so. There was clearly no progress on mod approval or weeding out the trash mods. Then there was the DMCA takedown filing on Isoku's mod. Mix that together with a pissed off mod community and the whole thing just collapsed in on itself. Quite the show though, quite the show indeed. I've been highly entertained throughout this whole mess. And all that entertainment came to me for free. Just like how our mods have been and how they will be from now on. Hah! One more article, this time from Valve. www.pcgamer.com/valve-has-removed-paid-mods-functionality-from-steam-workshop/

"...we didn't understand exactly what we were doing,"
Understatement of the year candidate right there.

Well... That's actually kinda disheartening. I went through only one bag of snacks. They're like equivalent to 0.40 USD here. I was hoping for slightly longer entertainment. :/
Oh, well... Maybe I'll have some fun with CO forums migration. At the very least.

Don't worry, there's still more drama to be had. Now we get to see how the modders who jumped on the system backpedal. Especially the SkyUI guys. Are they going to pack their *censored* up, go home and cry? Are they going to lash out at all of us and try to make this our fault? The SkyUI guy has been on a roll insulting everyone. I really want to see what he has to say now that he lost badly.
In other news, Darky released a blog. A blog where he says he feels sorry for Bethesda. I suppose it's to be expected since he isn't getting his wallet padded by them now. Gotta keep face with his master after all. Now all I need is for him to cry about his vacation again and the perfect circle will be complete.

I'm waiting for one of these backpedaling SkyUI team guys to make a Patreon announcement.

OMG. The single best response someone wrote after the announcement happened.
I can't stop smiling. I can't.
Edit: Same guy again.
Love it.

Someone brought up a good point I read. This is from that PC Gamer article I linked:
So...what if they want to try to do this again before a mod community establishes itself in another game? Like FO4. We might have just won a single battle in a war. Time will tell I guess.

I'm fairly sure we'll see the same sort of backlash if Bethesda ever decides to step into ANY modding community, regardless of how long it's been around, and try to make paid mods a thing once again. The damage to the idea has been done and the internet has a way of not forgetting or forgiving.

True enough. If anything, this whole mess has proven that the good ol' fashioned Torch and Pitchfork Method still works just fine.

Alright guys, here we go. Remember the Midas Magic dude? The guy who put ads in his free mod? The guy who insulted everyone on his page before it got taken down? steamcommunity.com/app/72850/discussions/0/611704730328215676/I'll skip the commentary on this one. Just read that and the comments below. It speaks for itself.

I had to stop reading when that one guy started drawing parallels between mod creators, book authors and professional recording artists and tried to pass it off as iron-clad fact. NOPE.
Four pages in, I just couldn't keep going.

Lol. Best quote from this link.
I have some laugh with people complaining how modders are like artists or developers, but aren't being paid for their work.
First, it's your work only when made with your 100% original assets. Or if you have permissions from everyone.
And modders like Millenia's team (gunmakers for FNV) who are indeed rolling with their own assets... Did not jump this bandwagon. And their mods are high quality, an entire pack is like some weapons dlc.
Usually there's no quality check with mods.
Also, how one can split this income between a team of people?
And what income? 25% of everything ad that's only if you were successful enough to earn more than 100$, except making your mod into a paid one actually lessens its chances for being popular enough... Suddenly it sounds less reliable than donations.
Now, it could work if it was made for a completely new game and it was supervised, like every mod needs to go through some kind of QA before authorisation. And share is like 50%/50%. But now it's kinda too late for Bethesda.
+edit: On a related note... It's about time gaming sites and services started nuking all accounts with obvious misbehaving in comments. Things like personal insults and death threats obviously aren't "for real", but some people should not be allowed to write only because of their attitude. This kind of vitriol is actually more harmful than any stupid idea coming from game companies. The Age of Entitlement could use some culling, the less merciful the better. Obviously some people won't start behaving unless they're properly terrorised encouraged to do so.

There's still a small holdover group of modders and their supporters who are for paid mods putting up a last ditch effort with insane "arguments" even though they've badly lost. My personal favorite that I read:
"No one should be opposed to people wanting to make money from their hard work. Unless you're a communist. You aren't a communist are you?!"
So much lolz.
My second favorite was a guy calling for all modders to stop modding just to spite the community. The best part? The community found out that the guy not only didn't make Skyrim mods, he didn't even own the game on PC according to his Steam profile. Hilarious.

SkyUI guy: forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1475216-relz-skyui/page-5#entry23949087Looks like we'll get the new version after all. I really thought he'd just pack it up and leave with it. I doubt we'll see him again after this though. He didn't update SkyUI for a few years before they told him he could charge for it. Though if you think about, it's ridiculous that Bethesda would make money off SkyUI. SkyUI was made because the default Bethesda made UI was borderline unusable crap. They would literally have been profiting for making a bad UI.

That's what many people were worried about. That system set the stage for developers to push out an unfinished/buggy game and leave it up to the players finish/fix it. All while making money from game sales AND player made content sales.
It would have set a very awful precedent.
