Similar reason for me, smaller scope. Was in great shape after HS and college but since have done as little as humanly possible and got up to 190 and round (36 inch waist). It doesn't sound like much but 5 years ago I was 150 and 30h inches and I want to stop it before it gets worse. What sucks is that I've been doing this for a year now and have seen very little progress, but I don't have the time to really go all out, I get 2-3 days a week at most I also have bad a bad back, knees and ankles etc but the training is good for it, and seeing a 50 year old man test to yellow with me and a another 50 year old man that could probably beat a mack truck in a fight training us is motivation; no excuses. I love food tho, so that makes things difficult, especially since I can walk in any direction and find some of the best foods from every corner of the earth within walking distance....

Amusing anecdote from my fencing career and entirely suitable to a superhero game discussion board:
A friend of mine as we were sitting around socializing after a tournament asked me, "If you could be a superhero, who would you be?" And I immediately answered, "Batman."
He was a bit surprised at the speed of my answer and decided to follow it up with, "Ok, now that's interesting. You didn't take any time to think about that or anything so I have to ask, Why Batman?"
To which I responded, "Well, I can't be Superman, I'm not from another planet. I can't be Green Lantern, I don't have a power ring. I can't be the Flash, I wasn't doused in chemicals and shocked by lightning in a laboratory accident..." And I think I listed off about five or six more with appropriate reasoning behind each before I came to the conclusion, "But Batman is 100% human with no magical devices or real superpowers to his name. He is the hero that any suitably deranged multimillionaire could be."
After listening to this and thinking for a moment, my friend replied with, "Ok, that explains a great deal. That's probably why after just six months of fencing, you have won three tournaments and after six years of fencing I have yet to win one. Where you would want to be Batman, I'd be happy being Scooby Doo. Put me in the back of the Mystery Machine and give me a box of Scooby Snacks and I'm a happy camper."

I did Tae Kwon Do in my teens for a little while and reached green belt. Then I got pulled out. Forgot everything but basic moves and blocks. Now fast forward to age 25, I wouldn't be surprised if I pick up martial arts again and encounter pre-teens in brown/black.

I went to a tournament back in the early 2000's and saw a demo team of 13 years olds wearing 6th degree black belts. Yeah....uh huh.
