Now go win the lottery, we are wasting daylight.

I seriously doubt anyone will buy Cryptic. Individual properties / games, maybe. But not the studio. Or if they do, they'll buy it to chop it into smaller pieces, and assimilate it entirely. Think about it: this is the SECOND time Cryptic has been shown the door by a publisher, due to a game "underperforming". Death knell time, folks. Major death knell time. When was the first time?

I was wondering what the thoughts were regarding Atari divesting themselves of Cryptic. According to Atari they now list Cryptic as "discontinued operations".
I love the game, but what is the future of it without Atari backing? I do hope they are able to make a go of it without Atari.
"In line with the previously stated strategy of fewer but more profitable releases and further expansion into casual online and mobile games, the Company has determined that external development creates more flexibility in the 3 changing marketplace. Therefore, the Company has made the decision to divest itself from Cryptic Studios. The divestiture process is underway and more details will be provided as appropriate.
As of March 31, 2011, the Company accounted Cryptic as a “discontinued operation” in the Statement of Income starting on April 1, 2009 and as “assets / liabilities held for sale” in the Balance Sheet as of March 31, 2011.
On a standalone basis and after intercompany eliminations, Cryptic accounted for revenue during the second semester of approximately €7.2 million and on a full year basis of approximately €15.9 million as of Fiscal Year 2010/2011 – as compared to approximately €4.5 million and €4.5 million on the second half and a full basis for Fiscal Year 2009/ 2010, respectively. The net results of Cryptic was a loss of approximately -€3.3 million for the second semester and on a full year basis of approximately -€5.3 million as of Fiscal Year 2010/2011, as compared to a profit of approximately +€0.2 million and a loss of -€12.6 million on a semester 2 and a full basis for Fiscal Year 2009/ 2010, respectively.
The results of Cryptic for both periods have been restated and included in the line “profit and loss from discontinued operations”"

Yes. And specifically, the game that underperformed that time was City of Villains.

I've never seen that mentioned as them being dropped on NCSofts accord due to a failing game.
Rather they sold their existing game to NCSoft as a way to generate what was needed to branchout on their own and do other projects and work with other companies (Marvel Universe Online, CO, Microsoft, etc.)
Basically it was a buyout and licensing agreement to raise funds for future products. Or do I have this wrong?

No one knows, we'll have to wait and see. I'll be playing the game until I can't play it anymore. I also need to spend some time with STO as well.

I really hope that the pricing scheme and such doesn't change a whole lot. If they suddenly start doing "pay-for-everything" stuff, even for gold members, then I'll just shed a tear and wave bye to Champions. It'll take a while to find something to replace that hole in my gaming habits, but there's at least some stuff in the future that looks promising.

I say good riddance. I hope CO continues to function and ideally prosper and that they find a publisher that will actually support them, or if they can do it, support themselves.
Maybe we're all retardedly blind and choose to place blame where there isn't any, but it just seems like every goddamn time Atari's name comes up it's never in a positive light, from "incentivising" Cryptic to pump out abortions as quickly as possible to "capitalize on the casual gaming crowd" straight through their wonderful phrasing in their expense reports to more recent events.
Maybe it's Cryptic digging their own grave the whole time. Maybe Atari is divesting themselves of a problem child. But "Atari's" track record with other games and companies doesn't lead me to believe so.
So I wish Cryptic and CO the best and pray that everything works out. I want Blizzard to come in with a truck-ton of money and tell's them to go nuts with the edict "be successful and make money."
The only issue I have with WoW or it's model or anything about the game is the players and Devs are raging D-Bags, but we wouldn't have that problem. Here's hoping.

I don't know anything about how these things go, but my gut says STO is the only part somebody's going to want. CO just doesn't have the upside.

Screw the Atari-pelt wearing Infogrames and their two cent bubblegum approach of trying to shoehorn MMOs into their ever-expanding cheapo virtual arcade of past-glory Atari titles. What kind of publisher buys an MMO studio of note like Cryptic, and then within such a comparitively short amount of time decide they'd like to focus on the casual mobile games market instead?. Just goes to show they haven't a clue what they're doing at the executive level. Look how they treated Eden Games with its Test Drive Unlimited 2. What kinda publisher slashes a Dev team from eighty to thirty whilst simulataneously expecting a decent product and development schedule. Apparently the top brass at Atari didn't even bother introducing themselves to the staff at Eden Games either. (see Gamasutra.com's interview). If memory serves, originally Cryptic was going to self publish, then it was partnered with Take-Two Interactive, then T2 Interactive had to drop out because of the Atari buy-out. No patience whatsoever and pretty pitiful investment as far as I can see. Good riddance and good luck with Deer Hunter Online and the rest of your portfolio. (you're going to need it)

Hopefully Take-Two shows interest in buying them, then, and lets them do something awesome. I mean, don't they own Gearbox, the guys who are actually seriously totally doing it this time, for certain releasing Duke Forever?
