Yeah, I just saw this one at another post at the "official" forums. I wonder what CO's fate will be now that Atri is looking to get rid of Cryptic. Will other game publishers want to buy the studio? It does have the best costume editor in the industry and a decent enough power system and customization options, but if Cryptic is generating that much loss I'm not sure it would be seen as a good investment.

Being a 5 year player of Turbine's Dungeons and Dragons and Lord of the Rings MMOs, a similar thing happened between them and Atari...and they're still up and running. I'm new to CO and joined when it went F2P, and been loving it. I just wish they had 'Cyptic Cash' Cards and sold them at Gamestop and Target like Turbine does and I'll be spending some real cash on the game

Silly question, but what does that mean in relation to staff? The devs are Cryptic employees obviously, but the community team, are they Cryptic or Atari or both? How about the Q&A testers and stuff?

I know a lot of you guys will be disappointed if this harms Cryptic's MMOs, but ... the only words that run through my head right now, after reading this? "HA, HA!!"

I dont know anymore than anyone else, but I have 2 main thoughts on this news:
1) Atari was doing poorly before it purchased Cryptic, and at the moment it apparently needs money right now so it is selling what it can to get it. However, last year's financial report shows Atari's online division doing well, so this isnt because Cryptic was underperforming. Atari just needs a lump sum right now.
2) Cryptic was its own independent company prior to being purchased by Atari, so there is no reason to think it cannot function on its own again if no other company immediately purchases it from Atari.
That said, we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

I know a lot of you guys will be disappointed if this harms Cryptic's MMOs, but ... the only words that run through my head right now, after reading this? "HA, HA!!" In your case... I can understand 2) Cryptic was its own independent company prior to being purchased by Atari, so there is no reason to think it cannot function on its own again if no other company immediately purchases it from Atari. I hope that is the case, and the thought did cross my mind briefly at some point, since working independently means they won't have to give Atari (or any other game company) their cut when the money rolls in. But it also means they might not have a budget for big projects and/or to cover certain expenses such people's salaries for a while if they're suddenly short on funds.

... Oh great. Now I feel like I've wasted money on lifetime subscription because of this. Man, I sure do hope they get a new publisher soon.

It could be a good thing depending on who picks them up. I can't say I've had a stellar opinion about Atari anyway. Although if EA gets their hands on Cryptic, I'm out of here. No joke.

I seriously doubt anyone will buy Cryptic.
Individual properties / games, maybe. But not the studio. Or if they do, they'll buy it to chop it into smaller pieces, and assimilate it entirely.
Think about it: this is the SECOND time Cryptic has been shown the door by a publisher, due to a game "underperforming".
Death knell time, folks. Major death knell time.

Frankly, I wouldn't have Cryptic do any such thing; I've been burned by Cryptic once too many times, now. So ... even if I won the lottery tomorrow, I'd rather found a new company, instead.
