This is a thread on the ongoing changes in Defiance.
I just logged into Defiance for the 1st time in months. I've noticed some changes.
CONTENT: They have these new missions called Episodes, which ties-in with the TV show's 2 main characters. That's somewhat nice, simply because it's more story-driven content rather than grinding.
GAMEPLAY: Easier enemy finding, they all have red arrows on their heads, like an augmented reality system saying "guy trying to hide here". However, they also added new expendable items, like temporary boosts, which are a little fiddly and don't seem that useful. To fit said expendable items, they had to change the mapping of my Xbox controller a bit, which just doesn't feel as fluid as before.
COMMUNITY: The population seemed to take a nosedive! As with other console MMOs, there's always been a lack of socialization; it's pretty quiet, we all just do our own things, but we help each other when fighting a common threat. I was playing just now and was surprised at how few players there are even in the Arkfall dynamic events, where everyone scrambles together for shared loot. They've introduced daily and weekly rewards just to bump up logins, it seems.
Just an update for others that had tried Defiance. It's still a fun 3rd person shooter, but not sure what's up with the population nosedive.

I've been playing Defiance regularly lately and the arkfalls have generally had a lot of people playing them. Yesterday was an anomaly in that you couldn't find many people doing arkfalls because they were doing the new episodic content.
The temporary boosts are hella useful, especially when stacked with other people's stuff. Putting down a spike that doubles everyone's damage or using a stim that instantly recharges your ego power is nothing to sneeze at IMO.
Here's some videos I made about 3 days ago. Nothing special as I was just testing Nvidia's Shadowplay software so I did no editing of any kind.

Still waiting for season 2 of the show. And weren't they going to do something where ingame choices affected the show?

Hi guys, yeah, I was wondering what I was missing. Although I didn't know about it, I had returned to the game the day the new Episode missions (re)appeared.
Once all the regulars got done with those and returned to Arkfall dynamic events, I kinda started to understand the changes. It was very much in Defiance's style.
It was the silent teamwork. The team bonus expendable items got everyone in these neat firing lines, without anyone having to say a word. It's just natural.
---
Raf, I was playing the Episode missions and wondering how it ties into the show, too. Not sure if you already played them, a no-spoiler summary here:
I played 4 Episodes so far. In 1, Nolan and his daughter from the show work with your character. In another, a NPC faction's searching for them.
Beyond that, there was some sort of event (maybe voting, maybe PvP) where 1 player's character was going to appear in the show.
The character was some generic woman in red armour IIRC, it was posted in the news way back. It was so generic, it could be anything.
And in all those cases, what I foresaw was just a drop-in into the show. Seriously, I was imagining how in the show, Nolan received a postcard from somebody in California, referring to everyone's character in the game. Or how Nolan mentions they don't want to go out West anymore because they're being hunted. Or that red armour woman showing up in a cameo about how they got some elite Ark Hunters from California.
Aside from those specific tie-ins, I can also see is re-using plot elements. Example, there's a zombie plague in the game. I can easily see that in the show, too.

Joh sent me this link the other night for the Season Pass for about £9.00 (or $14.00). Joh's bought it, I've bought it and it checks out, they weren't instant emailing my code to me but it's for real. www.gameholds.com/defiance-season-pass.html

Speaking of, when are ya'll usually playing? I run into Joh from time to time but don't think we've played together Super.

I'm usually online 10:30pm GMT until 1am, last few nights I've been on a little earlier. Mostly been on SWTOR and Defiance as a 2nd when I get frustrated with SWTOR.

I just picked this up on Steam for four-fiddy. What am I in for?
I guess I'm back now too.

I just picked this up on Steam for four-fiddy. What am I in for? I guess I'm back now too. Borderlands 2 style Shoot & Loot, not much need to chat as except for co-op maps and Volge warmasters the tactics are pretty obvious. Decent storyline which is enhanced by the TV show. I'm enjoying it still but I find it's best played picking it up for an hour or two for a good blast and then doing something else.

First time I heard of this game, I googled and find graphics and theme interesting. Is it a full MMO or just an online shooter?

Funnily enough I was just playing it, seeing what's new. I think it's also on sale on Steam for 5 bucks now.
It's a full MMO. There's a main storyline (pretty okay) where you might cross paths with other players, a bunch of side missions (the ones with no cutscenes, feel free to avoid them), near constant dynamic events. The whole thing is played like a 3rd person shooter, though, but it has a leveling system, inventory, loot, etc.
It's pretty fun, a game I often fall back on when I'm itching for some casual shooting.

I downloaded the game, I ll start trying it tomorrow. I have one question atm: can I modify my appearance/class after the character creator? I mean like a tailor/powerhouse in CO. The other questions is: what classes are? I see four but it does not explain much about them.

Hi Martoon, hope you enjoy Defiance! I downloaded the game, I ll start trying it tomorrow. I have one question atm: can I modify my appearance/class after the character creator? I mean like a tailor/powerhouse in CO. The other questions is: what classes are? I see four but it does not explain much about them. Changing your character's face and hair after: real-money cash shop item Changing your character's outfits (after unlocking new pieces): free, can be done any time, anywhere The "classes": are just backgrounds that determine your character's starting costume (AFAIK, those starting costumes are only available at creation, cannot be bought later). It's just for flavour. I also believe (but am not 100% certain) they determine -some- of the mission rewards (even though they did the same missions, IIRC my Soldier kept getting Assault Rifles as rewards, whereas my Raider got a lot of SMGs). However, the loot drops you get is usually much better, so those don't really matter. The powers: there are actually 4 different special "EGO" powers, which are actually what you would consider classes in terms of game mechanics. These can be changed for a nominal in-game currency (not real-money) fee at any time. You'll be given a tutorial early on, letting you try each of them, before you select. Of the 4 powers, Overcharge (increases your DPS) is the most popular. My personal guess here, I reckon initially each of the 4 classes was tied to one of the 4 powers, but they abandoned in favour of a Freeform approach where any character can select any power, then change their whole build quite easily. --- In short, at the beginning, the only thing you may want to take time with is your character's face and hairstyle, then her outfit from the 4 classes, as those are just set in stone at the start of the game. The rest can be changed later quite easily.
