So Gold accounts have 8 character slots. So if I upgrade my silver account to a gold one, do I get six additional slots?
Also, if I have more than two characters on a gold account, and I downgrade to silver, what happens to my extra characters? Do I only get to play two of them? If so, how is it determined which ones I play?

To answer your first question, yes; you get additional slots. To answer your second, I believe the way it works to be able to play ANY of your characters, you will have to convert them to silver. This means if they are free form, you have to choose an archetype. However, it should be completely your choice which characters you choose to convert, although you will only be able to convert 2 of them.

Thanks, I figured that much, but I mean, what if I had more than 2 silver characters?

Thanks, I figured that much, but I mean, what if I had more than 2 silver characters? The only way you can have more than 2 is if you have purchased additional slots from the store. If you have, I would assume that when you go gold those additional slots will still be additional(as in, you would still have the standard amount of slots for a gold account PLUS those that you have purchased). In that case, if you were to then revert BACK to silver, I would assume you would have the same number of slots you had before going gold. But again, this is just me assuming here. I'll post a thread about this issue on the official forums and post the link here so you an follow the responses.

Alright, thanks.
I wanted to start subscribing through game cards instead of recurring payments, and I just wanted to make sure I know what'll happen if I go back to silver.
Oh, and I had one last question. I can play silver characters on a gold account, right? I don't have to convert them, do I?

Oh, and I had one last question. I can play silver characters on a gold account, right? I don't have to convert them, do I? Unfortunately, you do. You dont have to change anything about them, but you do have to convert them to gold since you now have a gold account. The reason is because silver and gold are two different account types and you cannot have both a silver and gold account at the same time as far as playable characters are concerned.

Oh, that makes sense. Kind of disappointing though. I can only convert once, right? So I can't play them on a silver account after converting them because I already converted them once?

I'm not sure if this will help but I'll post my experience as a former Gold player gone Silver.
I used to play CO while I was waiting for STO to come out. After it did, I dropped my CO sub. Now that it's F2P I went back to play once again. When I first played I had a total of 6 characters. Upon logging back in, all 6 of them were considered Gold characters. Naturally, I could not play any of them. I did have the option to convert them, but I did not have an option to create a new Silver character.
Eventually what I did is delete 4 of the old ones that I no longer wanted to play and a new option to create a Silver character appeared. So right now I have a total of 3 characters. 2 Gold (which I cannot play) and 1 Silver, which I am playing right now. I also no longer have the option to create new characters. So it seems that unless I convert my Gold characters, delete my Gold characters, or resub, I'm stuck with only 1 Silver slot.
In addition, I believe that you can convert a character only once. That's my main reason that I don't want to convert my Gold characters. Someday if I ever have the funds to resub I'd like to have them ready to play again in free-form rather than archetype.

Ah true. I think I'll stick with my 1 slot though since I have some pre-order items, closed beta goodies, and some C-store costumes on my current account that I can use with my Silver character. But yeah, it's my choice to stay with my 1 account heh. Might be good for others who never had a Gold account and haven't bought anything from the C-store though.
