If you're looking for a good "old" PS game to try and see what the whole "schtick" is like, I'd highly recommend Phantasy Star 4. I know they have it on Steam, and they usually include it on their Sega Genesis Compilation game thingys on consoles, and there's always the less-than-legal emulation route I won't go into. Anyway, while it relates to Phantasy Star 1 and 2, you don't need to have played those to understand it. Plus, I think it aged the best with time compared to the other two.
Edit: It plays like the Final Fantasy games - i.e. turn-based combat, enter your commands at the start of the round, see what happens, etc. Also, the "sci-fi blend" comes in a bit after the beginning - it hints at sci-fi before eventually throwing the throttle into high-gear and never looking back.
As for the lobby-based thing, it's more like PSO's lobby-based setup. Basically, the "home base lobby" is the ship, with its shopping district and hunter's district. The small ship you enter before going into a mission is kind of the gathering point if you're waiting for everyone to start a mission, or just coming back from one. One "block" can hold a lot more than PSO's blocks.

I can probably get used to the lobby thing even though I prefer open world games.
Also, looking at that PSO World site Chat linked...I see that I'm going to be in the minority playing a male character. Everyone there seems to have either creepy lolis, boob monsters, or some variation of cat girls. Even the female robots come fully loaded with front mounted missile launchers. :3

But females are so mesmerizing to look at...
I recommend not drinking while watching it. Probably should have written that at the top.
But I'm planning on a lil male human or cast. (female cast are *censor* creepy!) Except in PSP where they were enjoyable enough. As long as they were in HUcaseal parts or Nono Schwantz. I would actually be surprised if they didn't release the good old PSO outfits in PSO2 in the future. Chat desires the true RAcast parts!

I'll probably do like I usually do.
So.... one male character, maybe two, and a whole metric ****ton of female characters.
....... Ok, so my MMO character rosters look less like a roster and more like a harem, or a pimp's catalog.

I go with harem. Sounds more classy. (And ditto. I'll have my one cat-eared male "me", and the rest will be ladies. :3)

Guh... It's PSU allover again.
They are going to westernize* the game before releasing it. *sits in a corner and rocks back and forth* (Although this was expected. Ain't gonna fool me trice! *humps slightly illegal copy of PSP2i*)
*I think it means racial slurs will be aplenty. That and hippetyhoppety music. (ok so I'm being ever so slightly sarcastic there...)

How to say... Lets say that instead of banning certain regions, PWE would let them play a rather slowly updated version with half a C-Store. And then change various missions to sort the banned regions culture. If you ever played Aion there was a quest with 3 axes. Asian culture it's a common story. Western culture is watching Jersey Shore.

Chat made a cheatsheet for when the memory goes bonkers. Got it right next to my screen. Just having that lets you play the game just fine. In addition to pressing buttons at random. Herpadederpa!

Wait, how do you westernize an action game? Add a few yo mama jokes and remove all the purty voiceovers so people wont get insulted when they game speak Japanese at them? Or as they did for Tera. Censor the crap out of it! Here's an official statement.I can assure you many giggles were had over the RMT laws excuse. Which is what it all is basically... Excuses.

Yeah all I see there are excuses. Other games, both P2P and F2P, can manage with global servers just fine. They just don't want to do it. I also wish that game companies would quit with this "westernization" crap. When I want to play western games, I go play them. When I want to play eastern games, I go play those. I actually like when I don't understand some of the cultural references because then I go and look them up and maybe learn something in the process. Oh right, using the internet to learn things is bad, oops! And that's my mini-rant for the day. Will still play PSO2 when it comes out anyway though.

Yeah... that was the part I was afraid "westernize" meant Bye, bye customizable boobs with physics and a buncha other stuffs... *sighs and head down* PS: I want to move to a non-western nation with actual mature people where they have nice things and the puritan idiots don't have the power to "fix" things...

Whilst I will play the english version(and glad it's coming even if it will be late) there's just the usual agony that SoA induces... They are a bit more incompetent at handling a MMO than PWE are.(speaking of the western world.) And that is something... PSU for instance. The difference between Jap and Eng there was just shocking! Jap version got the whole complement from Phantasy Star Portable(1+2+Infinity) added to it. (talking about an entire games worth of items and stuff to do) Eng version got... Nothing. So there's that. Peoples fears are fully justified.
