Well, at least we can say that, unlike the majority of mmo's, we will be able to do ugly toons

I recently got a chance to play a very early build of TESO for 30 minutes, thanks to a friend of a friend who has a friend who works with a friend who owes him one. I don't even.
Anyway, the game was pretty much Skyrim : The MMO. I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing yet, because, while exploration and radiant quests were the biggest draw of Skyrim, the combat itself, was by far the worst I have encountered in an RPG in quite some time. Too bad they've chosen to go down the subscription route to start off, they will be down the F2P path before they complete an anniversary. Hopefully.

Not so surprising, TES games has never been known for awesome combat systems, everything that is relevant about games from this series is the immersion element, story, role playing element, lore, and other goodies, but combat is simply not the main point, which is the reason why I think making an MMO of a TES game is dubious if not downright crazy. But lets hope they fix any problems and it works out.

I just realized why I have no interest in ESO. I can't mod it.
I also just realized that I don't really like Bethesda games as a whole. Fallout 3/Vegas? They were alright, but it was because I could mod the crap out of them that I enjoyed them so much. Skyrim? Same deal. I'm still playing with Skyrim and because of all the mods I have, the game is practically unrecognizable from the vanilla Skyrim. I don't think I could ever play the game as it was intended without all my mods. And I think that's why ESO never held any interest for me. A vanilla experience just doesn't do anything for me.
Hmm. I'm not sure how I feel about that to be honest. It's kind of a weird revelation that I play those games because I can make them into something that they were never intended to be.

If anything, I've gotten more excited for it in the last month or so; character customization looks awesome and I found a live stage demo of some in-game action... they even touched on skills a bit, and it sounds super awesome. :3 www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWXjzLEGV9UThe pièce de résistance is the fact that factions have their own skill trees, and the brief mention of vampirism and lycanthrophy skill trees. X3 And also, most- if not all- skills can branch into one of two versions. Kinda like Champions Online-esque advantages.

You just nailed it mate! My Morrowind installs got filled with sexy babes in latex lingerie, super badass Custom Daedric and Glass armors, new races, improved skin tones, faces, landscapes, and environments, game mechanics tweaks, custom storyline, new towns, and even companions! And the same could be said about Oblivion. incredibly, despite having put thousands of hours into those two games, I still haven't played Skyrim yet, I wonder if is as good as the other two. It would certainly feel weird for me to play this TES MMO and not be able to play god and mess around and tweak it to my taste. So if anything we are speaking of vanilla TES as the only option for a game whose signature has been "mod till your computer explode!" Certainly not a good prospect for this incoming MMO. They are going to have to add a lot of customization features on character creation and perhaps customizable storyline to be able to make up for that.

Never played any of the Elder Scrolls games, so I have no reference. But Skyrim isn't bad. It's just boring if you don't mod it up. The really big mods I had to do are combat and skill overhauls. Specifically magic. Had to add in around 500+ spells and some new skill trees to make it more interesting. The base combat isn't all that great, but there are a ton of ways to fix it up. Also had to do environment and audio overhauls, ENB (and all kinds of other lighting adjustments), body/texture replacers, animation replacers, and of course hundreds of weapons and armors.
But yeah my Skyrim install is reaching the 30gb marker with all the mods I have. I know a few who are up to 80+ though lol. It's not a horrible game, just not good one. Have to mod it up to make it really amazing.

Nice heads up, thanks Lantesh. I might check this out again when it's B2P.
I played the Beta for a bit. My impression was a not-so-great PvE experience that ended up being single-player most of the time, with a hilariously insane PvP warfare component.

I been interested in this, please let us know how it is after B2P. I joined CO when it was F2P and in the initial fortnight I recall there was a lot of lag issues.
If you give us the high sign that things are ok, I'll likely jump in this weekend.

To be honest, I'm going to be skipping ESO for now even though it's now B2P. I haven't heard enough good things about it from my own personal sources to give it a try. I'm also not willing to spend that much money on it. If it goes on sale for $10 like GW2 did, I might grab it then. I also have a good amount of games on my plate right now to keep me busy. So I'm afraid this one's getting a pass from me at the moment. I just thought I'd drop a line in here to let others know what's going on in case they do want to play it.
