If you prefer support, go for: Mind, Grimoire If you prefer dps, go for: Blade, Marksman, Inferno, Soldier If you prefer tank, go for: Glacier, Behemoth
If anyone can post those gold ATs, please do so, since I have no experience with them at all. All the above listed are the free ATs.
edit: added in soldier. missed that out.

Inventors are likely one of the most broken AT's they have even with the fixes once you get into the teens or higher. Healing is all over the AT, they mount a good offense and add in funky special attacks and abilities. Topping off with an Orbital Weapons Platform at Level 40.
And it gives you a chance to have a funky dressed, huge goggle wearing nerdy sort fighting crime and it makes sense.
And as a Sentinel its good to take damage you gain energy and can turn that into formidable replies and the odd turning an enemy into a living teddy bear or disintegrate most AI opponents - what is there not to like?

Tempest and Void are probably the two most powerful AT's hands down - at least at lower levels. If you are interested in Tempest, you won't be disappointed - immediate chained hits and massive damage, best-in-class energy return, great powerset!
Specialist is a lot of fun, but doesn't actually do enough damage.
Savage is unimpressive as an AT, but when I mixed up snake-girl in FF, the Savage-base took off like a rocket!
As far as free AT, the Blade and Behemoth are excellent and both are a lot of fun! I love using a Behemoth to clobber the snot out of villians and vehicles!
I though Mind was pretty lame - I guess it's really there for support and that takes a team to use it with.
Marksman is very good, but looks lame quick-shooting arrows for close combat - when I went FF with A.Sky I got her a sword.
I started with the AT Blade, and he's still my favorite - you have to get out of the tutorial and get his Lunge+Nailed to ground and a non-flying travel.
I have tried out all the AT's, but remember I'm still a noob so my opinions don't go beyond Lvl 15!

Normally i tend to stick with range styles but at this point ill try any type. i like the game i just cant choose an at and its pissing me off I did a similar exercise. In particular, I had pinned high hopes on Grimoire and Soldier. The problem was how squishy most ATs are, which didn't feel particularly heroic to me. In the end, my 2 characters are a Glacier and a Behemoth and they worked out pretty well. They pick up speed around level 8, when they get their passive defenses (Invulnerability and Defiance respectively). At level 11, they can choose a Power that increases their damage output, and that's when they really come into their own. For the Glacier, I personally favour Snowstorm (invest 2 points for Eye of the Storm right away). Target a mob or a boss, and just hold that button down to get a huge Snowstorm going, then block. The Snowstorm keeps hurting your enemies, while blocking their attacks charges your Power back up to finish them off with an Ice Blast (with the Hard Frost advantage highly recommended). This character is now almost level 30 and that simple 2-step process is basically all I needed so far. In fact, it's so effective it's kinda dull. For Behemoth, get Roomsweeper without a doubt (invest in the Rank 2 and 3, NOT Concussive Blow). It's an Area Effect punch that does decent damage by itself, but also inflicts falling damage (as enemies get hit so hard they fly up and fall down). You're going to start using different tactics and strategies as the Behemoth advances. In both cases, I chose Teleport as the Travel Power. I found that makes a huge difference to their gameplay as it allows them to be stealthy and tanks. I tried a Glacier with Superjump and a Behemoth with Flight and it just wasn't as much fun.

The other thing to remember is that some ATs become better at higher levels. For example, for Inferno, you get your "real" power at level 17 when you get conflagration. Before that, it's meh. At level 17, you go from "meh" to "wow!".
For Mind, you don't get your AOE attack until level 32. Until then, it's just put them to sleep and ego sprite them to death. Very slow going.
For Grimroire, you don't get Skarns bane until level 27.

Man, I've been looking for this very post for the last 2 months: The other thing to remember is that some ATs become better at higher levels. I was always curious as to the 'sweet spots' of the ATs in terms of their levels (like for Behemoth and Glacier, it's at level 11 like I said above). Like in all RPGs, certain classes come to their own at different levels due to some trademark ability or power, and you just spelled it out for me. Thanks!

I am playing a Marksman lately, and I abso-frikkin-lutely am having a ball with it.
If you like ranged, you will enjoy this. The powers can be used while moving, which I use as much as possible.
Get them following you and as you back up you charge up a torrent of arrows, and *thwack* they all go flying backwards. If any survive, they are now too far away to hurt you before you nail em down.
And it uses quarry, which may be my favorite passive in the game. take the healing advantage.
