I'd love to be proven wrong, but I do sense incoming s***storm with this contest.
It may be even worse than with create-a-villain competition, and it will not be Cryptic's fault in any way. But it may end with Cryptic North not doing any contests of this type in the future. Not with this community on official forums.
Honestly, I do not expect Cryptic taking something, that was conceived as a fun community contest, seriously to the point when they have their 2d artists redrawing every entry picked for voting. I don't think there is a big chance for them to do so. But if they won't, it will end with people spitting even more venom than after create-a-villain.
All it takes to start this circus is to have at least one or two entries with more readable art, not necessarily mine, but, for an example - Kaizerin's, Spordelia's, this necrotech guy (who very likely either commissioned his entries, or asked someone for help) picked for voting. And it will start. People are already throwing fits over some entries looking better than others. >_>
Oh, well, if it will happend, CO community alone will be the ones to blame.
But maybe I'm just a pessimist. I'd like to be proven wrong this time.

To be fair, the biggest issue people had with the create-a-villain contest was that the 1st place winning entries didn't conform to the rules of the contest, yet Cryptic picked them anyway. Unless we see them ignoring their own rules to pick winners again, I don't see how this would end up being a turdtempest. Sure we're gonna get whiners complaining about how they don't like certain winners because they feel their own entry was better or they didn't like the art used in the submission or they feel favoritism was in play but that's hardly cause for concern. Complainers gonna complain.

What happened in the Design A Villain contest? I went on hiatus at the time.
I did google for it and I saw the entries, read up to 20 pages of it. However, the rules, which were posted on the old website, are now gone.

However, the rules, which were posted on the old website, are now gone. Basically, it looked like devs picked the victor because of game design reasons, which weren't entirely unreasonable, but the choice was entirely against contest rules announced. Victorious entry was submitted without costume files, only with regular screenshots, and two submitted characters of the same player were picked, not only a single one (albeit each player was allowed to post two villains, only one was supposed to be chosen). And that was after one of the devs explicitly confirmed that submitted entries must have costume files attached.

I can't access the old site, even with script editing. What I remember being the biggest issues people were having with the grand prize winners were: Cryptic picked two submissions from the same person for the grand prize, both of which the winner later stated were meant to be joke submissions and never submitted a costume file until after his entries won, because he couldn't figure out how to submit costume files. Then there's the part about one of the rules stating you couldn't name the character after an already established character in the IP. The villain now known as Frosticus was originally submitted as Freon, which Cryptic later changed to Freon II after it was pointed out to them that there already is a Freon in the game. Many months later, it was changed to Frosticus.

I'm just amazed by how many submissions are slight variations of what already exists ingame. i do hope that the devs decide to go with something more original or at least not currently in game.
also..... VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!VARIABLE ROBOT!
still note sure what i will vote for but i might have a slight leaning towards something.
as i live not far from their offices i may have to drop off some pizzas with a hint about which submissions should be put on the top of the pile.

I particularly recall the claims that the winner didn't actually play the game, based on his general lack of knowledge of ingame villians (alerts were active then and freon alerts were appearing regularly) and the fact it took over a month for him to get in contact with cryptic after winning.
Good times.....

I recall as well, that winner was playing rarely. He had some costume unlocks, but it is a rather significant achievement to miss Freon both in SL and Alerts. Well, play time should not be a real factor in forum competition, but it was one more issue with this contest.

I'm just amazed by how many submissions are slight variations of what already exists ingame. i do hope that the devs decide to go with something more original or at least not currently in game. I think Cybersoldier had very good idea with his thin plating costume. We have bazilion armor parts, but beside the cyberpunk plates (that are always transparent) there is nothing to go with any set of tights and keep streamlined look. I also liked Spordelia's casual set. Again, we have a lot of casual clothes, but hardly any glamour ones. Worse, there is not enough casual and good looking things for males. Good thing one of my males is a robot, and another one is power metal fan. Otherwise I'd have a very hard time dressing them... Plus... Not extra-short short skirts would be nice. As it is for now, I rarely use short skirts, because they are way too short. And this is considering that I use more realistic proportions with character legs never longer than half of a total body length. It looks even worse with default body shape.

Well, all entries now can be voted on Arc and in Facebook. All entries are also of the same graphic quality, so... It's okay.
On the downside... I'm competing with myself as well. XD

Wow, well played, old bean. Looks like you got run of the table!
I also saw what you mentioned in the commentary page. Well handled.
