At the urging of my tabletop RPG buddies, I started Diablo 3 again. The context is that it's about to get an expansion, Reaper of Souls, coming March 18th.
1st, some obvious things. The expansion has more storyline missions and a new class, the Crusader. They're also abolishing the Auction Houses, which has been discussed before.
2nd, less obvious things. There's an Experience +50% bonus until the expansion. There's new awesome loot with strange abilities, like swords that hook enemies towards you.
3rd, new gameplay modes. There's new menus where you will be able to select things like Bounties mode. There's also a new way to level up your characters with stat bonuses.
Finally, get this: Blizzard's making their own cross-game launcher, like ARC. WoW, Starcraft, etc. It's the new Battle.net. I was a little caught off-guard.
That's the long story short. It looks like this week is a great time to check out the game again, with the XP bonus and really awesome loot, until Reaper of Souls is out.
It's still the same grindy game, but how they improved simple things like a sword that can hook enemies is keeping me intrigued for maybe a month.

Is there a way to play it if I'm somewhere without a connection?

Is there a way to play it if I'm somewhere without a connection? Only with a hack, but it's one I don't trust. It looks like either Blizzard or Activision is maintaining their "online-only" party line. Just some quick impressions while playing. Leveling is fast, about 10 minutes per level. Legendary orange items are dropping frequently. I think it's great for people who already have Diablo 3 to check in, but I'm not sure I see this game attracting new players. EDIT - Just as I mentioned Diablo 3's not attracting new players, Blizzard just dropped the price of the game to US$19.99 today.
That may interest those who have some friends playing Diablo 3, but if you passed on this game when it came out, you'll probably pass now.
