Cryptic made both CoX and CO. Since they were under NCSoft's wings for CoX, I can see why they left to make CO, but...
... I don't get it. They removed the stupid grind that NCSoft required of all their games, but also removed the collectible enhancement drops from NPCs like Instant heals and damage/defense buffs.
So my question is, How the frell are we suppose to survive in CO without any form of viable healing? I found the vender that sells the heal that can be stacked in (6), but they are very small heals AND have a large reuse timer, not to mention we only have (4) slots to put activation items in.
Note: yes, I know that npcs still drop buffs, but come on they only are useful after the battle is over usually. Plus per the patch notes, Cryptic actually decreased the drop rate of these buffs even. WHY? They don't last long enough to even be useful in your next battle.
Also the Free Demo version of CO gave me more incentive to actually buy the game then this F2P version with watered down Archtypes. I think if they would have opened the free demo to level 15 cap, like they offered for the "bring a friend" but without requiring the friend's code, they would have had better success. Oh well, I guess it is their game and we will just have to wait and see what the future holds for CO.

You're not supposed to self heal. Archetypes are specifically designed to be limited, and among those limitations is the lack of a self-heal. You're supposed to either put up with it, go with a group, or subscribe. Basically, this game is currently a significantly extended trial.
You're right - Cryptic decreased bubble drops for the sake of making soloing more difficult. They also severely increased the cost of Stars, so now death is quite punishing until you get lucky enough to restore some of your stars or purchase Star refills.
Oh, and you will want to look up a guide for any Archetype that you want to play, because Cryptic also made it impossible for a Silver member to fully retcon (by imposing a 250G resource cap).
That last bit doesn't really have anything to do with your post - it's just good to know.

I was disturbed during Beta when the two archetypes capable of self-healing (projected heals kind of don't count) were made Premium. It is unfortunately the trend, it appears.
For healing devices, the crafted ones are usually nicer than the purchased ones. Arms has straight up heals, no quirks. Science has a higher overall healing value, but it's over time. Mysticism has a massive healing burst, but it's got a backlash after 90 seconds (rarely a problem, IMO).
If you're low level, then yeah. It's probably going to be painful. A number of the archetypes are "late bloomers" that will faceplant at early levels. Another design decision I don't necessarily agree with, but that's the way of it. Most of them, however, become capable of tearing apart the lion's share of the game's soloable content at higher levels when your offense and utility really fleshes out.
