OK, so I created Auto-Doc (free form) for the full purpose of Heal/Support Role. I want him to be able to go thru the PVE and survive some combat, but not looking for particularly strong OFF or DEF.
Um... how do I do that?
From the Wiki powersets, it LOOKS like I want to follow the Celestial power set, but from what I read everywhere else there seems to be only Mind classes used for healing - so it must be better somehow, or is it just that Mind is an archetype?
Starting Stats:
Inates: END +12, REC +12 Super Stat: PRE (& END) First Talent: CON +5, END +5
Staring Powers: Celestial - Radiance (Eng Buld), Rebuke - both are Dmg/Heal, typical 50' tap and 100' charge.
Passive: Planning to use Regeneration - that way I don't have to spend as much gear buffing CON to stay alive (I've used Invul and PFF already, time to try Regen).
Another immediate future skill will be Frezy for a close area attack (those special moments).
I'll be reading what I can on the forums, esp build guides, and look forward to any and all comments!

Question: what do you want the rec and end for? I can see End as second superstat, true, working the same in effect as my own Pre/Int healer. But sentinel mode has such an energy return that you should rarely struggle for energy whatever your superstats are. I haven't tried it myself, but people have been very successfull apparently with Pre/Dex healers, aiming for a lot of critical heals. Con is always nice to have. I haven't actually tried regen myself My healer uses Radiant Aura (Mr.Funsocks called her "the Aura *censored*" ...) and used to use Primal Aura.

PRE is an obvious SS, I was planning on END or REC for the second SS on the assumption that I would need it - If it looks unnecessary I would probably go with CON for survivability. I often use END and REC as initates to get a good kick start using powers right away - plus the two are always good stats to have anyway - it never goes to waste...

If you are between End and Rec, I'd advice towards End. Loads of energy never hurt anyone... well unless they were trying to open a certain door on a certain submarine End could be useful. Rec though for a complete healer is probably a waste of superstat. If you have other freeform characters that do not use Rec as a superstat, just do the experiment and swap them to Sentinel build for a bit and look at your energy bar.

If the theme is tech-related, I'd recommend Protection Field and Inertial Dampening Field from Force, Bionic Shielding from Gadgeteering, then some maintained heal. I like Aura of Primal Majesty, but that aura has a very distinct look. Aura of Radiant Protection would be more generic. If you're going to have paranormal damage attacks, Seraphim is good.
My two support toons have a lot of offense, so I'm not the best for giving support advice. But one thing I like to do is have attacks with defense debuffs. Chest Beam and Ebon Ruin are two examples. That way you support the party even further by making their attacks do more damage.

I guess my main quandry is between the Celestial power set and the Mind power set - and what level of focus needs to be on healing and other support vs personal combat readiness....

Are you going to be soloing or playing in a team? Amunet (my healer) was made with teams in mind. She has her energy builder, her t0 attack and one more. Other than that she has support powers. She doesn't need to kill things, she let's the others do that. I have killed Qwyjibo a few hundret times on her and I have run Therakiel elite a few times. Solo content I have to play on normal though - she just can't dish out damage... though she is great for farming perks as she doesn't need to wait for energy between killing all the groups of henchmen

Yeah, well Auto-Doc is definately for our team play - but that's once a week and not necessarily the Alt I use, so he's gotta go thru the PVE to keep level-pace...
There's his calling, and then there's his daily grind...
Anyway - I've been reading what I can - it seems like there's just not much out there on Celestial OR Mind powersets. I found some stuff, but I guess I'm gonna be experimenting and taking notes.
Auto-Doc is doing much better in combat now that I got him Frenzy (Lvl 9 now). He can heal from a distance or close and do real damage.
Thanks for all the feedback!
