So this month I've decided to subscribe, then changed my mind about a dozen times. Could really use some advice from anyone who's been gold for awhile. Apologize in advance for wall of text >_< I'm mostly a pvper, and I'm not huge on pve content. I am doing a full pve playthrough, but I'm running a Grimoire partied with my fiancee's Glacier. Needless to say, even on elite mode we've torn through pretty much everything. I'm somewhat worried that going freeform will pretty much remove any remaining challenge from the game entirely (assuming I don't just randomly take bad powers). Archetype pvp has been pretty good fun - how is freeform pvp like at the moment? From all the complaints I've read about DW and defile builds, it sounds pretty... silly. I'm as happy to go fotm as everyone else, but instant gibs make for rather boring fights. Customization-wise, I love the gold travel powers. Of course, there's the little matter of teleport+acro being pretty much a necessity for hero games, and if I'm gonna be lvling up almost solely from pvp... Almost all the costume pieces I actually want to use are silver >_> Then I'm left with just figuring out which is cheaper - buying some char slots, demonflame, and maybe a gold AT and inv slots, or subscribing until I get bored of the game. So my questions are: - How much do people enjoy freeform? Apart from the look-what-I-made factor, AT PVP and PVE seem far more balanced and therefore fun.
- Is there any actual endgame? From what I've read on the forums there isn't, but these are posts from 2009...
- How long do people actually stay gold in general? =P
Huge thanks for anyone who takes the time to answer

I'm not gold, but I've had similar thoughts... debating if it was worth it to get a subscription If you are commited to the game long term, Lifetime is clearly a better deal price wise Archtype PvP is far from perfect but it's still fun to do. Freeform is a complete joke, all you have to do is lookup the powers on the wiki, any sort of previous gaming experience will tell you it's broken. Unless you like to powergame to the max and use the best of everything it will suck. If you care about balance then going gold for freeform PvP is a mistake. Also you can just queue up and see for yourself. PvE is a different story, you are no longer burdened with trying to compete so you are free to build however you want. You could even make an intentionally gimped character if you want more of a challenge... If your primary concern is PvE and the game can keep you entertained then it might be worth it. I'm not subbing though, I plan to buy a couple things here and there. When I get bored I can just walk away no strings attached and then comeback whenever the mood strikes me. It would take alot to make me sub, major PvP support and balance is a main concern Heh, I was going to buy superspeed but you make a good point. If I PvP alot why bother? Teleport is better than everything. Maybe it will finally get nerfed if it costs them money

I don't mind powergaming to be competitive, but if competitive is actually just teleporting around until you can instagib someone, that's just WoW S5 all over again =P Still, with the prohibitive cost of archetypes and char slots, a decently satisfying F2P experience would look like: (assuming $25 purchase) 2 Extra Char Slots: $14 Gold Archetype: $11.50 Extra Bag Slots: $2.50 per DemonFlame Mission pack: $5.25 One travel power: $5.25 Costume Set: $4.75 Cosmetic Fun Stuff (Transform/Shrink ray): $9-$11.50 Assuming you pick up just a smattering of this stuff, it's still $50 right there, or just over 3 months' subscription. If the guy on Ebay keeps selling 60-day cards for $10 + shipping, it comes out to just under 7 months' worth of subscription, during which you'd earn 2800 cryptic points to put towards your f2p chars anyways... Then while it's true that anything you purchase will stay yours, it's also true that your gold chars will still be there if you ever subscribe again - and the best new features will cost money when you come back to the game if you're not gold in any case. Agh so hard to decide Alternatively there's always the option of just rolling up a new account and paying $20 for a gold archetype, a bag slot, and demonflame =P

Not counting the transformer/shrink ray because of the variable prices 2 Extra Char Slots: 1120 pts Gold Archetype: 920 pts Extra Bag Slots: 200 pts DemonFlame Mission pack: 420 pts One travel power: 420 pts Costume Set: 380 pts =3460 pts 3500 pts is $43.75 on my craptastic Canadian dollar a 1 month plan is $15.44, at 3 months that would be $46.32 and 1200 stip a 3 month plan is $43.23 and 1200 stip It seems real close except for the fact that you are renting gold, which means you only have whatever came from the stipends if you unsubscribe (not much). You also have no access to the Freeforms or Gold Archs you spent hours leveling and gearing (unless you turn them into silver archs). So you can continue to subscribe in order to access everything until it reaches a point where you were better off with a lifetime sub or no sub at all Of course if you can get good deals like that one above or dont plan on playing for the duration of a lifetime sub then strike while the iron is hot right? I dont see the need for a bag slot though, whatever purchase decision you make

imo, the only use i see for gold membership are the freeform characters you can create, and the 2 free adventure packs (demonflame and serpent's lantern) which come with the gold subscription for free, unlike me, who would have to actually pay for the 2 adventure packs... which i didn't. i'm not trying to be a wet blanket here, but for me, i'm content with f2p content as it is. i see no need for freeform when i have MARS stims/shields and devices that can bring me the same power as what a freeformer wields except for certain drawbacks such as cd time. also, why solo when you can team up? teaming up and bashing everything on elite is definitely more fun than soloing everything. but eventually, it's up to you. the extra character slots are appealing, extra costume slots are appealing too. the extra bank and inventory slots even more so. but the bad point is that all these will be gone when you stop subscribing and you have to revert your hard-trained-spent-tons-of-time character to a silver archetype or you can stop playing forever.... or you could just resubscribe.

Gold also includes any further powersets, adventure packs, gold travel powers or gold costume packs, along with a 400 Atari Token stipend every month to pay for what isn't on that list.
Gold membership will increase in value as the C-Store grows, at least if they start adding Gold things in the future. Resistance and Heavy Weapons are coming up, both of which you have full access to, but have to pay for with a Silver account.
I would never want to drop to Silver, but I also love building characters and playing them. I know of people who have tons of fun with Freeform PvP, but also bear in mind that it's insanely unbalanced - some people have thorough understanding of the powers and builds and can drop you in seconds/survive almost indefinitely, and some people have no idea what they're doing.
You can still participate in AT PvP if you want more balance, however, if you keep your AT character or make a new one.

One thing that *is* attractive about gold (esp. with half-priced game cards) is that you can switch your gold AT to an entirely new AT when you convert to silver. So you could subscribe for a few months, play 4 of the Gold ATs, then buy 2 char slots with your stipends and convert them to silver ATs and have 4 completely new classes.
I found a post from last year saying that they were planning on some of the new ATs being silver releases, so a year from now there should be more silver options as well. Going by the # of frameworks still unused in f2p: Force, Power Armor, Dual Blades, Claws, TK, Might, Celestial, Infernal... there's room for a few more ATs to come >_<

Okay, due to someone linking this post I've been able to confirm that you can convert a character from silver->gold, and convert back to silver with 0 hassle as long as you don't switch between freeform/swap archetypes. Since not being able to play my main if I swapped back and forth from gold to silver was the main reason I was dithering about subscribing, this makes the decision very easy to do so Yay
