There have been rumors swirling all over the place about Wildstar going F2P. Well...it's a rumor no longer. Wildstar is officially going F2P. That's right, F2P and not B2P. No purchase necessary. www.wildstar-online.com/en/news/2015-05-28-wildstar-is-going-free-to-play-heres-all-you-need-to-know/Well, technically speaking it will be hybrid since there will be a sub option. They're calling the subs "Signature Players". Full list of all the goodies and details on everything in the link above. So there we have it. Pretty much everyone knew this was coming for a long time now save for a few ultra hardcore sub supporters who are all probably crying right about now. I'll be giving it a go myself once it makes the transition.

I tried the free 7 days trial code shortly after launch, game was decent but I must have seen 3 other players the whole time I was playing and it wasn't inspiring enough to play it alone.

Nah. More like the game was just bad and no one was willing to pay a sub for it.

Great article, great summary, Lantesh. Totally accelerated my decision making.
My question is, which faction, which class? I heard Stalker was good for leveling.

From what I've read while I was lurking around the WS forums, it seems that Exiles are the popular side, mainly due to Aurins. The Dominion seem to be the smaller size population wise. That could change once F2P goes live, so who knows.
As for classes, I'm not entirely sure yet myself since I haven't played before. I'm pretty set on playing an Aurin the first time around. Do keep in mind that classes are race locked. So for example you can't play as an Aurin Warrior. Aurin can only be Espers, Stalkers, or Spellslingers. Other races have their own lockouts.
As for stalker, I saw a video yesterday that gave a pretty good explanation of the class.
It's a bit old but I thought it gave a good idea of what the class is all about and how it looks in combat. I haven't decided which one I'm going to play yet, so I still have more poking around do to.

I always avoided Wildstar because they kept billing themselves as THE WoW-killer. Any advertising or marketing campaign centered around how much better it is than another game isn't worth checking out in my book. Advertise your gameplay or world building or PvP or SOMETHING game related! Give me a reason to want to play the game!
I think I'll still be avoiding this, unless it receives absolutely glowing reviews.

And so it begins again. MMO launch time, that is. Cue emergency maintenance and gamers crying about it. Never fails. Ever. Happy launch day all!

Well I was able to log in, make a character, and complete the tutorial. I think. Once I picked the option to go down to Nexus, the game goes to a loading screen, locks up, and then dumps me back to character select over and over and over again. At least the character creation bug that prevented people from making new characters seems to be fixed. Or maybe I just got lucky.
The bad news is that the servers are still a wreck and I can't seem to claim anything from the store. I have some daily log in rewards and some items that I got from signing up for the 2 step verification, but I keep getting red text saying that there's been an error and that I can't claim my stuff. Woo.
Wildstar relaunch is brutal to the max. Recommend not trying to play for at least a week or two.

Thanks for the heads up, Lantesh.
Also...I'm curious about what you think of the gameplay. I buy into the art direction and stuff, but I was watching a few reviews and a common comment was that its gameplay was really old-fashioned, like Everquest One-levels of old-fashioned. Agree/Disagree?

Contradictory to what I said before, I gave Wildstar a shot and Lantesh is right on the money about it being a mess right now. The lag is so bad that combat breaks on the fundamental level. Engage a group of mobs, start your AoE and watch it do absolutely nothing to whatever else may be in range after the first foe gets dropped by it. Information is traveling so slowly that the server craps out trying to keep up with what you're doing.
For anyone else thinking about trying this out I'd go with Lantesh's advice and wait a couple of weeks for the hype to die down a bit.
As far as gameplay goes it's pretty faithful to the old MMO standards, the game doesn't really do anything new in that area. It really seems like the art, world building and storytelling got far more attention than anything else.

Yeah it's still pretty brutal. The main servers are so jacked up right now. Apparently the problem is that the megaserver tech that they're using is completely broken. As in its not even remotely functional. It's supposed to be more along the lines of STO/CO where they have 1 server and can expand it or downsize it depending on population demands. But since the tech they have is completely broken, they can't do that which is why everything has gone to *censored*. So what they did is open up a second set of temporary servers to handle the influx. They then opened up free character transfers to let people transfer off the main servers to the temp servers. Once they figure out how to fix the broken megaserver tech, the temp servers will be merged back onto the main servers. If you don't want to wait for that (because who knows how long that will be) then I recommend trying to transfer or make a new character on the temp servers. I transferred over today and was able to play with no queues, no lag, and only 1 disconnect in about 3 hours of play. YMMV though, but it's worth a shot if you really want to play some WS. Before I give my comment, I'll just note that I'm only level 9 as of this post. Mainly since I wasn't able to play at all the first few days. So the experience I've had so far is still limited. The general structure of the game is pretty standard stuff. Go to area, get quests (fairly standard kill this, collect that, deliver this stuff), finish quests, move to next area, repeat. It does have a decent story line (so far) and lore objects and text scattered throughout the world. You get a secondary set of quests/objectives based on the secondary class you chose. So since I chose settler, I get settler missions to develop areas, build things, and get all manner of neat buffs that I can share with all the other players around me. It's not bad at all and encourages some exploration to a degree. Combat is initially pretty boring. If you play it with the default controls, then it definitely plays like a run of the mill MMO. However, after digging through the settings menu I found a beta option to use Mouse Look. This option drastically changes combat to be extremely similar to Tera combat. Your first and second skill slots get bound to your left/right mouse button which frees up room for other keybinds. It makes it so, SO much easier to move around and dodge things. Combat goes from clunky and boring to quite fluid. I won't play the game without using it now. It should have been the default setting for a game that relies on movement and dodging telegraphed moves. If you want to play WS and you aren't using Mouse Look, then you're doing it wrong. The bad news is that it takes a bit of time and effort to set up. You have to manually turn it on and then have to go and rebind all your keybinds from standard mode to Mouse Look mode. You then have to make a keybind to enable/disable Mouse Look mode. The reason being that it isn't quite as solid as Tera's controls are. You will need to pop out of Mouse Look to use some functions and click on some of your UI buttons as the need arises and then pop back into it. I'd say it's maybe around 90% complete. However, it's still good enough to use over the standard control mode. It's just a hassle to get the initial set up done. That's about all I've got right now. Will need to get farther to make more comments since I'm still in newbie land.
