So I'm a tad late to this party but recently there's been a lot of hullabaloo over in Warframe country about Digital Extremes recent dealings with PWE. Source: www.reddit.com/r/Warframe/comments/29olv7/what_we_currently_know_about_the_pwe_deal/Right now it seems like it's just talks about investment but with how secretive both sides are being this news has sparked major controversy within the Warframe community. Assuming this does lead to PWE putting their finger into yet another pie, do you guys think this will end up being another CO horror story or will it go the route of STO and do alright?

Oh man, I got to give Warframe another try. By the way, did you hear Neverwinter is going on Xbox One?
Thanks for sharing this information as well as asking our opinion. It should go the STO route, or even Neverwinter.
What happened at CO, based on what I found, was more Cryptic's choice than PWE. Cryptic chose to move its developers from CO to STO and NW, introduced lockboxes (btw, lockboxes are either a grey-legal or outright illegal in China where PWE's from, due to gambling restrictions). To my understanding Digital Extremes works on 1 game: Warframe, so there's not the same type of cannibalisation? Don't know if they have another title planned.
PWE just bought Cryptic because it had the cash to do so, they want to see they get their money's worth. If you want to say they don't care about CO, I think I agree. It's just an asset to them. I think that's still the case, so instead of holding on to cash that depreciates quickly in China, they figure just invest it in another Western game.
For Warframe...it might actually benefit them. Not just alright, but bonus. What they get out of it is a major cash injection (not saying Warframe's not doing well, I don't know, but more resources means they can succeed even more) and, assuming this Neverwinter on Xbone deal doesn't fall apart terribly, it might lead to further such partnerships (don't worry, if PWE manages to put Warframe on Xbone, they will almost certainly be separate Xbone and PC servers). I know we're mostly PC purists here, but that even helps them reach a larger addressable market.
So PWE is giving them money as well as potentially helping them to make new deals for their game. The Warframe crew might be the big winners.
Regarding the secrecy of the deal, yeah, all such M&As are supposed to be done in private until all information is ready. That's the proper business practice. You have to publicly announce when the time is right, which is when both parties are good and ready with all necessary details, not before, because piecemeal information is even more confusing.
