Kindly allow me to contribute my two cents.
A build's role is mostly determined by the slotted passive used. So if you use a particular passive, then you could be in either the passive's role or Hybrid.
If Defensive Passive then Tank role for more defense, etc. If Offensive Passive then Melee or Range Damage role for more damage, etc. If Support Passive then Support role for more healing, etc. All of the builds above could also be in Hybrid role for a balance of everything.
Supercollide's build with Night Warrior can be in either Melee, Range Damage or Hybrid.
Tammy Waffles' Until build can be in either Range Damage (Quarry), Hybrid (Quarry and Defiance) or Tank (Defiance).
Xstorm's build with Quarry can be in either Range Damage or Hybrid.
Generally speaking damage roles are used against mobs for faster kills whereas Hybrids are utilized against bosses for better all around balance particularly healing.

Okay, you saw it? Good. Allow me to explain it. You know what Overdrive is, right? It's an energy unlock who grants an Energy over Time buff when an Toggle (press and forget, like Minigun or Reconstruction Circuits) or a Maintain (hold the button, like Plasma Beam and Tactical Missiles) ability got, well, maintained for at least half it's duration. Another example: You have Lightning Reflexes, which boosts your dodge and avoidance rate. You want a healing power. Which one do you use? Bountiful Chi Resurgence with the advantage, which allows you to gain health while dodging.
And of course, gear up accordingly with your build. That's pretty much the best advices I can give.
