I'm taking a Network+ re-certification course and today we covered the usual bit about network security. During the lecture the instructor started mentioning some notable cases of well executed acount hacking and poorly implemented network defenses. Cryptic getting hacked in 2010 and not finding out about it until two years later made it to the top of his examples of security blunders and how you probably shouldn't do things. Thank goodness its an online course, I probably would have caused a scene from laughing so hard. Not sure if this is a case of any publicity is good publicity.

Oh wow. I heard about this, but never knew any details. Do you have any notes you can share with us pls? Or just let us know the story behind it?

It was sometime last year I believe that cryptic made an announcement that their database had been compromised two years earlier. They didn't make any announcements about it in 2010 because they didn't know it had happened. Google "cryptic 2010 hacking" and see if you can find any of the articles that were published about the incident. My phone surfs slowly or I'd give you links myself.
