Hi, we're all just sharing experiences with other F2P MMOs, because there's so many now.
Disclaimer - not trying to turn people off CO, CO's my permanent home. I just think it's nice to get out of the house sometimes, otherwise cabin fever sets in. With Cryptic North focusing on bug hunting, which I appreciate, there might not be new content for awhile. So this is an opportune time to check out something, see other ideas, and bring them back to the CO experience. Those of us that are Silver can ironically afford this more, as we don't have to worry about wasting subscriptions. With that out of the way, here's what I'm playing:
DEFIANCE (I first heard of this from Supercollider)
1 Sentence Review - it's Borderlands the MMO, if you removed the humour and replaced it with a TV show on Syfy.
What It's Like - it's an open-world third-person shooter, very straight-forward. There are RPG mechanics, but it's all about 1 thing: loot. You can choose your character's background, but he/she's an Ark Hunter, a glorified looter. There's these dynamic events called Ark Falls where you and all these other looters rush in and kill a bunch of big bads, then you all get loot! In relation to CO, it's like the Blood Moon event where we all run around trying to loot zombie heroes. It sounds dull, but the game just so does not give a crap about things like plot, character development, and roleplaying that it works. Team Fortress 2 used to be my go-to game when I just wanted some quick pick-up-and-go shooting action. Now, it's Defiance.
Not a gameplay shot, but my raider-style character here describes my experience perfectly
The Hilarious - so we're these looters, looting a dynamic event. Then we all get into our vehicles, these beat-up post-apocalyptic transports, and rush to the next one. God help whoever gets in our way, because we won't. It's the funniest thing seeing this Mad Max style fleet of cars tearing through a futuristic California like 2Pac and Dre were rapping with us. There is an enemy faction of Raiders who pillage local farms, but they got nothing on us as we literally run over them. We don't brake for nobody when there's loot.
The Hilariously Bad - we have this implanted female cybernetic companion that's trying way too hard to be the next Cortana of Halo. The voice actress did a good job, but they only paid her for a few lines, so she just constantly spouts the same thing. The worst is during the storyline missions. She'll try to give you exposition right when all the enemies rush at you. She's so horribad, but is so earnestly trying to help, that she comes off as a really interesting character. But it's totally unintentional, which makes it even funnier.
Final Verdict - this thread's about other MMOs as a vacation from CO. Defiance is perfect for that because it's only got a short & sweet mission storyline. If there is a problem, it's that it's too short & sweet; it was released as a Full Package Product 6 months ago, but IMHO it's really a DLC title. But that's what it is now; for US$7.50 you can unlock the full game...but AFAIK all that means is a few fancy perk bonuses (like +1% damage resistance) you may not need. IMHO, worth the download, then decide if worth US$7.50
DRAGON PROPHET (I heard about it from you guys when it was in Beta)
1 Sentence Review - so I know it's got dragons, dinosaurs-like dragons, but I'm still in the character creator...
The Hilarious - ...because for female characters, it's got 5 different sliders just for breasts, lol.
The Hilariously Bad - it's got 5 different sliders just for breasts, lol. I further discovered there's also 2 buttocks sliders.
Clearly the biggest 2 things in here are the dragons and your interactions with them...no, that's a lie
What It's Like - I'm at level 20 of max 50 and so far it's just a re-skinned WoW clone, with an anime design. The dragons unfortunately take a backseat. They're mounts and combat pets, but really take a backseat to the same old, same old fetch quests.
Final Verdict - I thought about it and I reached a shocking conclusion: you're better off playing Neverwinter. Both these games are going for a more action-oriented feel and Neverwinter does it better. The dragons are so secondary, it's not much of a draw.
