I played in the early CB and it was a mess. So much so that I'm not sure why the even started the beta then. It was missing so much dialogue that it was almost painful to play.
I see the potential in it though so I may try it out again later. I found the idea of taming dragons for different skills instead of just learning them from leveling up very unique. I had a dragon that looked like a raptor than ran freaking fast. However he couldn't swim at all and wasn't very sturdy in battle. So I found and tamed a water dragon that looked like a crocodile. He couldn't move as fast on land, but holy crap he could swim fast. I ruled the lake in the newbie area with that guy lol.
He wasn't all that hot in battle either though so I started looking around for something more meaty. Well, I stumbled upon a heard of dragons that looked like massive armored mammoths. Fought and tamed one of those bad boys and omg he was a killer. He didn't move all that fast on land and couldn't swim due to his size, but he was a monster in battle. I stuck him in the dragon lair and trained him up and swapped around his skills a bit and there wasn't much that could stand in my way.
As far as player classes go, most of them are fairly standard MMO classes. Oracle was different however due to being a magic user with a massive scythe. It reminded me of Dark Knight from FFXI so I rolled one up. The combo system isn't too shabby but becomes a bit boring on it's own. You really need to include dragon skills to make combat become really fun. Basically without dragons, you suck. Sometimes you have to stop questing and just go out into the wild for some good ol' fashioned dragon hunting. I actually like that aspect. You can also have multiple dragons with you and swap them in and out depending on the situation you find yourself in. It's very cool.
But yeah it was really, really rough in the early stages with the broken mechanics and missing text. Sometimes I had no idea what was going on. Right now STO has me locked down with the new Romulan stuffs, but I'll give this another shot for sure later on.

Yeah in it's current form, it's riddled with bugs and placeholder code, and really unfinished. But I like a lot of the concepts in the game.
Like you pointed out, having different types of dragons for different situations, having to manage which dragons you take with you adventuring, which ones you keep in the lair etc, is very reminiscent of the good ol' Pokemon games, just feels way more badass. I liked the combat too, the combat animations and the whole feel of it was much, much better than Neverwinter. And I'm really excited about their building systems, where you get to purchase land and build your own personal houses or guild houses, and design them yourself.
Hopefully, they're working on polishing the game up now, and it should be playable soon.

Why the hell did no one tell me about this earlier? What is wrong with you guys, talking about Neverwinter when this thing was around? What the hell, fellas? I thought we were friends. Friends tell friends about games with raptors and crocodiles and armoured mammoths.

LOL! Sorry 'bout that! I was holding off telling people about it due to how busted and incomplete the game was. I haven't played it for a the last month due to how busted it was actually. I agree with Rykage though, if they can get the game sorted out and fixed up it will absolutely be better than Neverwinter could ever hope to be.
Edit: Oh and in case anyone was wondering...yes, you can absolutely find and tame dragons that fly. Dragons can be called in combat to help you fight and use their skills but they also serve as your mounts. That means that you can find dragons that run freaking fast like my raptor did, swim at ridiculous speeds like my crocodile did, or find that big, badass dragon that flies through the skies and hop on their back and take off. I didn't get far enough along to find a flier, but I saw people with them tearing through the skies above me.

Yeah, I actually agree. It's for the best you held off, I'd rather see it when it's good and ready.
I totally see your point, because you can only play a game for the first time once.
But here's where I was coming from: I read gaming news and comic strips, and am a SOE customer...
...so how the hell did no gaming press or commentators or even SOE not mention this to me?
On the other hand, we just proved friendly word-of-mouth proved the best source of info.

I guess it depends on where you go for gaming news. I generally get most of my stuff from Zam. They tend to be a little heavy on WoW at times, but they have a whole sub-site dedicated to it so I just ignore that stuff. I started off using them back when I played FFXI but since then they kind of exploded into a gaming news site rather than just a FFXI fan site. I just stuck with them since I already had an account there lol. Anyways that's how I found out about Dragon's Prophet. They ran an article about it before the beta started that had an interview with one of the devs.

I gave it a go this morning. These guys aren't kidding about it being unfinished but it gets a pass at that since it just hit open beta. The taming mechanic is neat; a little mini-game where you have to keep a fidgety icon in the middle of a circle whilst the dragon you're taming tries to throw you off it's back.
I made an Oracle since it seemed the least cliche of the bunch. Combat was easy enough but when it came time to allocate stat points I had to sit there long and hard trying to figure out what stat choices would suit an Oracle best. A buff they generate through combat relies on Intelligence and something else so those two stats were easy choices. I ended up evening out the rest among the stat pool. Seemed to work alright at low level but I can't imagine that will end up being the preferred stat spread after a while.
The unfinishedness of the game really puts me off more than I thought it would though. Taming dragons loses it's novelty fast and by itself isn't enough to keep my interest. The crafting process seems bloated with steps. Gather materials, refine what you've gathered, use refined mats to make catalysts that help make better items, combine raw materials, refined materials and your catalysts into the actual items you equip. Then there's enhancing and socketing said items. Bleh.
I sure hope they make great strides with the game before it's released.

On the other hand, we just proved friendly word-of-mouth proved the best source of info. I've subscribed to the MMOHUT and TGS (The Game Station) channels on youtube, as well as the individual channels of some of the TGS team like TotalBiscuit, Force, AngryJoe. That's where I get all my news about the latest in gaming. MMOHUT's weekly recaps keep me updated on the latest in MMO news, and TGS keeps me updated on everything else related to the gaming industry. Also, now may not be a good time for you to check it out. It's really unfinished like everyone is saying. Once it's polished a bit though, it's going to be a mighty fine game worth your time.
