Alrighty so I don't want to start any sort of panic but there's been a sharp rise in the number of threads and posts on the STO forums about people's accounts being hacked.
In each case the victim has had their registered email accounts changed (to circumvent the email based account guard) and then locked out of their own PWE accounts. The new registered emails are all random letters and numbers registered through Hotmail. So far Cryptic has been able to get them their accounts back, but now I'm seeing reports of the accounts coming back with all of their characters deleted. The ones that don't have deleted characters are coming back sacked of all their items/money/etc.
We don't yet know if this is a database hack like what happened before (the whole 2 year hack scandal thingy) or if there's a compromised website out there (like the wiki) or what's going on. I'm posting this up here because a whole lot of us have invested a ton of time and money into our accounts and I don't want to see anyone else lose theirs. So PSA: Go change your passwords and stuff right now. I already changed all of mine.

Aaaargh. and of COURSE, PWE doesn't allow passwords longer than about 14 characters, apparently. Just a heads up for those people trying to change theirs. When I tried to input longer passwords, it kept giving me "Your passwords do not match" errors.

This is the same sort of M.O. gold sellers use to hijack game accounts in other MMOs. Typically accounts hijacked in that manner had compromised their own security by giving their account information to a gold sales/power leveling site or shared their account info with a friend who ended up not being trustworthy.
Even if you don't deal with stuff like that it's a good idea to change your passwords anyway as part of a routine.

I'm hoping that's all it is, but the sudden spike in them over the last week has been a bit unsettling.
Edit: Nah, first draft of this post sounded too sensationalist. Took that junk out lol.
