So the news as of this morning is that RIFT is now going F2P. www.zam.com/story.html?story=32365Can't say I'm surprised to see this coming. Raptr was giving away free copies of the game earlier this month along with free sub time codes. I just had a feeling this was coming.

Whoah. Like, it's one of those writing on the wall kind of things but I'm still surprised. Didn't they release an expansion recently?

Yep. The official FAQ on their website says they released the Storm Legion expansion on Nov. 13, 2012. I haven't kept up with RIFT at all so I have no idea how well it was received. Something along the way warranted a switch to F2P though.

Heh, yeah pretty much.
Now if only I can convince Square Enix that FFXI/FFXIV need to be F2P I'd be golden. Seriously I'd go back to XI in a heartbeat if it were F2P.

I've been putzing around in Rift lately playing on low level characters cause that's all you can really do with Rift Lite. Upon taking a character to 20 I noticed I wasn't getting hit with the message telling me I've hit my limit. I mailed some stuff to an alt and decided to keep on going, maybe it would allow me to fill up the XP bar but stop it just short of 21. Dinged 21 and then eventually 22. I'm not sure why I'm not getting stuck with the trial restrictions; I've not been subbed to the game since 2011.
Fluke or no fluke I'm gonna take this opportunity to push as far as I can before the F2P conversion. UPDATE: Well I figured out what the deal is after a little bit of snooping around. "Announced by Elrar, the friendly neighborhood community manager, all current owners of RIFT have free-to-play until it launches for everyone next week, June 12." Taken from this article.

Free-to-play launched yesterday and so far I'm really REALLY liking what they're doing with the cash shop. As you spend Credits and/or subscribe to the game you accumulate Loyalty points, when you've reached a certain amount of Loyalty you unlock free goodies. When you completely fill out a Loyalty Tier you're given a bunch of free goodies all at once. Being a former subscriber I was given ~7700 Loyalty points and 198 credits. I got a lockbox drop and decided to buy a key. Buying the key gave me more Loyalty and opening the box yielded 88 pieces of a kind of PvP currency and a piece of low level epic gear which triggered a shard-wide message that my character was the first on the shard to obtain said piece of epic gear.
There is gear in the cash shop but from what I've heard, read and saw they aren't really anything special; definitely not any of the best gear in the game. After taking a look at the selection they really seem to be more for looks. I think that's what they were going for here since they increased the amount of full wardrobe slots from 5 to 19. You can also buy these same pieces of gear from the cash shop for in-game currency if you don't want to spend Credits on them. Practically all of the gear already available from faction merchants or special currency merchants is on the cash shop as well, purchasable with in-game currency. Heck you can even open the cash shop window and use it as a vendor to sell you trash items whenever you want.
They also offer game time passes which work kinda like TERA's old chronoscroll system. Purchase the $10 Credit pack and instead of adding the credits directly to your account you get an item that, when used, grants 1,250 Credits. This item is tradable, you can sell it on the Auction House, trade it directly or mail it to other people. So it's entirely possible to fund your subscription via in-game methods now. The passes themselves come in three varieties: 3, 5 and 30 days. The passes themselves aren't tradable, taking effect as soon as you purchase them BUT they can be gifted to others if purchased as a gift.
tl;dr RIFT's F2P model ain't too shabby and the game itself is worth checking out.
