I came into CO about 4 weeks ago, fully intending to not subscribe unless I was still playing it months down the road and wanted more. I plunked down $25 and then another $6.25 to unlock a couple of ATs and some costumes and costume slots.
I came to the realization that I wanted to keep trying the other ATs, and wanted to quit deleting my characters to try new things, and wanted to unlock the majority of costume parts -- so last night I went gold. Access to freeform characters was really not that high on my list, though now that I've played with it it's pretty fun. I have never put any consideration into buying consumables or combat-enhancing devices from the cash shop -- in fact I kinda forgot they even existed. Now that I have some leftover tokens and a stipend, I still won't buy them; I'll use those tokens on costume unlocks.
I thought Guild Wars was dull and only played it for a couple weeks.
I thought DDO was fun, and paid to unlock the Monk class -- but was annoyed that there wasn't enough free content for leveling without grinding the same missions repeatedly.

Well, should be interesting to see if it passes your test of time. I'm kinda doing the same thing, only going for life. Why rent, when you can own? Granted, it does take almost two years to break even, but still, if it's worth it... And considering the fact that I go through fazes of games (Really into this game this month, but three months down the road, not really, and then six months later, really into it again) If it lasts long enough, I have a game that I don't have to worry about loosing the disks to like I did Diablo 2.

This is what killed fun at DDO for me too. And then you have LotrO coming from same complany, where you cant level for free at all without grinding deeds points or w/e (which i dont find fun, neither a bit) to unlock quests in other areas. Yet in CO you have all areas, quests and levels unlocked (excluding adventure packs, but those arent really needed) and peope still complain.
I have a lot of fun as silver now, and i will purchase a couple of character slots just to test other ATs. However, this game might get boring for me during time, but that happens with all games though.

I haven't gone gold yet, still waiting to see how fun endgame is, but I've seen 60day gamecards online for $15. Seems dirt-cheap to me *shrugs*.
At that price, does the argument change? Are the benefits of subbing worth $7.5/month?

Are the benefits of subbing worth $7.5/month? While value is subjective just keep in mind that for that $15 for 2 months you get $10 worth of Cryptic points(800) to be used in the C-store from the stipend for those 2 months. So for $15 you're getting $40 worth of game ($15 per month x2 in addition to $5 worth of points x2) and those points can be used to unlock things you can keep when/if you go back to silver.

Um, CO is based off the turbine system. Except with one very notable difference - you can buy everything a subscriber has with LOTRO and DDO, but you can't buy everything a Gold member has in CO (IE, Custom Frameworks). So so very wrong, Enemy mode in LoTR is sub only and I'm sure there's a DDO equvaliant.

Until they allow converted silvers to go gold, then go back to silver, I have no reason to go gold. I did buy swing and specalist, but don't see anything else I 'had to have' in the store. I agree, not "enough" perks for gold members. Nothing to convince me to keep paying every month. I personally see a lot of promise with Champions and its future. I'm prefectly willing to pay for a game if it is something I enjoy playing. I'm also of the mindset that subscribers fund game advancement. You want new game content? The easiest way in which to motivate the developers is that old movie line "Show Me The Money." I can see the wisdom of the F2P model. But like any business, Cryptic and its backers depend on profit to keep the game going and fund future expansion. It may sound crass and I don't mean to personally offend - But it I treat F2P like old school Shareware.. If you use and like it.. Pay for it.

Then again, I've already decided once I get the money for it (after buying my new computer first so I can play the game decently) I'm going to be lifetime subscriber. CO has done for me, in just the brief time I've played it, the one thing I thought impossible - be more interesting than WoW.

They wanted to be like LOTRO, which was a HUGE success.

This statement... To be honest, Guild Wars is the best MMORPG (and possible best game) I've ever played, and Guild Wars 2 is going to blow every current MMORPG out of the water and redefine the way the genre is made and played for years and years to come. ...and this statment... Rift looks interesting, but it sounds like it's trying to copy off of Guild Wars 2 without offering as much. ...boggle my mind. Liking other games is a given but advocating a game that will take CO and "blow it out of the water"...on a CO-related forum...by a moderator no less? The nonsense in here is thick enough to cut with a knife. 1. He said GW2 would wtfpwn current MMO's. Which means a) he wasn't talking about CO only and b) i really don't think he was talking about super hero MMOs at all, those really don't compete that much with standart MMOs since they're kinda niche anyway. 2. He's right. GW had the best PVP content/systems i have ever seen in any MMO, i practically stopped progressing through PvE at 70% through the game for about 6 months. Playing only PvP all the time. If they nail the whole "do your own unique story and just stumble into public quests without noticing" and so on, GW2 might be the first true MMO when it comes to the "feeling" of the world ie. persistent and massively while still being an RPG. God i can only hope they do their thing as far as game design goes and take notes from Trion on how to be a publisher. If that happens...never mind SWTOR seriously.

I sweaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar...
Sorry. Roxstar pretty much said it already.
For once, there are almost no games with such a great f2p model as CO.
Second, AT's can face, team, and w/e they want with other AT's, so whats the problem?

Now, compare that to the c-store and say again: do you really hate CO's cash shop? Only when anything new is only available via it. Then I hate any cash shop?

Wow! Good night, where do I start? To start off...and you can ignore this if English isn't your first language...but seriously please proof read your posts. Think about what you're going to type before your fingers take off and surpass your thoughts. So much of what you say is broken into tiny bits and pieces it makes it quite difficult to read. Calm down. Take a breath. Then type. Okay to address your issues. 1) It's been commented on before that this game is very solo friendly...before F2P ever came around. So Archetypes (AT) have no effect on that aspect. Also, ATs have their own PvP. How and why does having a free-form character make ATs inferior? If you're grouping with them they should be on your side...helping you out. What's funny is that if ATs are so inferior wouldn't that actually ENCOURAGE teaming rather than the single player game you call CO out to be? 2) It's F2P...I don't see the validity of your argument here. That's how F2P games work. Sorry. 3) Cash shop is almost purely aesthetic, save the premium ATs. This game really does not require such min/max raid teams that WoW would. ATs are easily welcomed onto level 40 lairs. Trust me, it was tested over and over during beta. With full AT teams. You're not going to be passed over for an invite simply because you run ATs. 4) LOL!! You, in no way, shape, or form, need boosts and consumables from the cash shop. Seriously, you don't. I leveled all the way to 40 on a concept build which is arguably worse off than the ATs. Not to mention I was a fully built tank. You DO NOT need these extra items from the c-store. You're closing argument has been discussed on multiple occasions. I'm tired of explaining it. I'll let someone else inform you why your suggestion is not gonna work. Now regarding LTs. I have no problem with additional aesthetic items in the c-store because I don't pay anything else anymore. I want to support this game and since I no longer have to pay monthly this is one way I can. Not to mention we have a stipend now. So I really don't have to pay anything else at all (if I wanted to wait). And I just have to say NO. GW has nothing on this game. NOTHING. It took me less than a month to reach their max 20 level. It took me around 5 months to get to 40 here. Add that to their lack of character customization and boring content. You don't think there's a cash shop but you still have to buy full retail box addons. Which locked out of entire content...not that I wanted to play it anyway. The only content you're locked out of in CO are adventure packs which are rather inexpensive. I'm sorry man, but you need to calm down and reassess yourself. If you still don't like it...go away. We don't need negativity here. Please keep posts constructive in light of Rules #1, #5, and #6.
