Step 1. The Basics!? Create Account - Download game - Set your Graphics and Sound options etc etc.
Step 2. Create your Character! This is where you make your first big choice, Which Archetype?
There is no best archetype, it's really up to you sort of a hero you want to be/what sort of a role you want to play. There are 8 free ones atm, effectively 2 different roles. The really big difference between free and paid archetypes is that paid ones generally have a much better ability to solo due to their self healing ability, only available to 2 free archetypes. Here's a quick summary of the free ones.
Tanks
The Behemoth - Melee, Defiance makes it the best tank for big bosses. Does decent amounts of damage and can maintain energy with knocks.
The Glacier - Range, Invulnerability makes it best tank for general mobs, but slightly less effective against big bosses. One of the best solo archetypes, but kills things very slowly. Can maintain some energy with chill + shatter.
Melee DPS
Blade - Single target damage, Bleeds, Some dodge/avoidance for survivability.
Range DPS
Marksman - Spike damage, Has a hp on kill skill, High Dodge/avoidance for survivability
Inferno - AoE damage, Gains energy back by setting things on fire, No survivability
Soldier - Highest maintained damage, Gains energy from critical hits, Has one of longest range attacks in game, Can stealth and run.
Support/Heal Class
Mind - Only real healer archetype, Holds gain you energy back, Has a block which continues for a while after you stop, allowing you to heal up. Another one of better solo Archetypes.
Grimoire - Support archetype, Aura that boosts teammate stats, Can summon sigils which are like a static defense. Only other class with a heal. Sigils + Heal makes this the other easier solo Archetype.
Step 3. Make your costume! This bit is all up to personal preference, but try to stick to a theme instead of sticking all sorts of random bits together. You can also always change this later.
Step 4. Start Playing! First I suggest you go through your control settings, mouse over to get a decent idea of what each thing does. The tutorial is pretty helpful to get use to things, so I suggest playing it the first time through, and skipping it the second time around.
Step 5. Meet the POWERHOUSE! Once you get out into the "real world", the first thing to do is head to the powerhouse, the big gear spinny thing. From there you will get your lvl 6 power, and a travel power. Which travel power should really be up to personal preference, but teleport is generally the most helpful.
Step 6. Your First Ren Cen Quests! Before anything, there are two easy missions you should do first. You should talk to Socrates and do his quests. Explore the city and visit all the areas, you'll eventually be revisiting most of them. Then you should pick a R&D/Crafting school. Once again, this is up to you. There are 3 schools, and you should probably pick based on either Action figures, Costume Unlocks, or Theme. None of the crafting items really keep up with other gear, except for the level 40 purples, and even then, the cost vs stats is ridiculously bad.
Step 7. Millennium City? You basically have two paths to choose at this point. Millennium city can run you all the way to the mid 20s, but Canada and the Southwest Desert tend to be faster leveling. Alternatively you can PvP your way up, but there's a lack of archetypes in the arena, especially if you're not in the US, which means you're playing at weird times in US time. Archetypes also have no hope in Unrestricted PvP, at most, you could pick one of the tanks and try and be annoying for 15 seconds whilst your unbreakable is up. Joining a SuperGroup (Guild) can also be helpful, with more people to guide you and help you out. Teaming generally makes for slightly slower leveling when you have more than two people, but is more fun, so try it out!
Step 8. Quests Quests and more Quests! There is no cow level. Questing is the fastest way to level without paying. From 6-40 you should basically just be running around doing quests. If you don't know where to go, check your crime computer in your missions window.
Step 9. Rise of your NEMESIS! At lvl 25 you get mail from the MCPD, asking for your help. Once you get there you are given the option of making a nemesis. Once again, everything is up to personal preference. Choosing their henchmen should probably be based on theme, and if not, which perks you want to get. You get more nemeses? later. Henchmen will start appearing out of nowhere when you're out and about. Killing them will sometimes drop a nemesis clue, which progress you further in the nemesis chain.
Step 10. The End, Unity, Lairs and Gear So you've finally reached level 40. Some people complain about end game content, but I think there's a decent amount of stuff to do. There's a couple of ways you can go about this. You could do Unity missions, but it'll take you forever to get those average items. You could do lairs, which can sometimes yield the best items in the game for specific slots. Things that come to mind are Perfect Shots from Andrith Ruins, and running Therakiel's Temple and Mandragalore.
The easiest way to get amazing gear is through the auction house. Suprisingly, most items aren't too expensive. You can probably get a great full set of equipment for <250g. For primaries, pick the slot you want to fill and search legendary. for secondaries, check out the item prefix guide to know what to search for specific stats.
PvP can also be fun and yields nice gear, but the acclaim is still quite hard to get.
Step 11. Your second character! Since you have two slots, you may as well make use of them. One of the differences with your second char is that you may have the money to buy a become devices. These devices can be very useful, as most of them have some sort of healing, and can let you play a difference role. Vampire in particular is very helpful for squishy characters. Bind a button to your device slot, and press it in an emergency, Block and hopefully you can regain some hp, then lifedrain to refill your hp.
Step 12. Have fun! That's the main reason for playing this game isn't it? Don't take things too seriously, enjoy your time, and take time to be nice and say Hi to new players
