I looked over the archetypes, and there doesn't seem to be one that has the unarmed martial arts power set, am I just overlooking it, or do I need to actually pay cryptic in order to create an unarmed martial artist?

As of yet, there is no Archetype that mainly employs powers from the martial arts Framework. While a number of Archetypes have one or two powers from the martial arts Framework (such as Parry or Lightning Reflexes), none of them are what you would call a Martial Artist Archetype. If you want to make a character that uses unarmed martial artist powers, then you'll either have to subscribe and make a Free-Form, or you'll have to wait until Cryptic releases an unarmed Martial Arts Archetype.

Damn, so much for being able to create any type of hero then. The game looked so interesting too.

I believe that Cryptic is currently being over-restrictive in their fervent desire to gain subscriptions, and that if they opened up the power selection to Silver members (via purchases, of course), they would gain much more money by way of C-Store purchases.

I agree, too. The intent is well, and I appreciate that I've been able to sink hours into this fine game without paying a dime. Asking for more is just plain selfish. But there was one thing the non-free-for-all version had that was superior to what we have now; It had a trial version. Even if you could only try two powers from each set, or mix and match either two starting powers from either set, it was still a great sample of just what kind of craziness you could get into if you were to subscribe. The very first time I tried it, I made some kind of gangster werewolf with guns. A werewolf! With guns! He'd shoot people to build up energy, then pounce on them and tear them apart, and that's wild and awesome and made me want to stick with the game when it went free to play!
Now, there's no way to sample any of that. I'm not even sure if there's a way for a silver player to even see all the available powersets that are currently locked away behind subscriptions and archetypes. I'm sure a lot of people would be more willing to subscribe if the game made a bit more of a point that you could, right now, be playing as a werewolf with dual Desert Eagles. Or a giant robot with shoulder-mounted chainguns that also uses a longbow and a sword because he's crazy.
I wonder how far Cryptic are planning on going with the archetypes. When the idea was introduced to us, I was sort of hoping that we might get roughly one free archetype per power set. But because they have fewer powers than exist in each set, and you can't mix and match even a single power, those would still be inferior to the old frameworks. Non-free archetypes, I imagined, could be ones that combine multiple frameworks, like the current Specialist. But oh well, it's their business...

So when you say "Martial Arts" you mean unarmed right? If not, the Blade archetype uses the Single Blade powerset under the martial arts style framework. If you're willing to spend a few bucks, the Specialist is a mix of dual blades MA and dual pistol munitions powers.

That would be good. I'd be more than willing to drop a couple of bucks for a new powerset or two. So when you say "Martial Arts" you mean unarmed right? If not, the Blade archetype uses the Single Blade powerset under the martial arts style framework. If you're willing to spend a few bucks, the Specialist is a mix of dual blades MA and dual pistol munitions powers. Yeah, I meant unarmed. The closest I can see is maybe the behemoth, the might power set doesn't seem to be weapon dependent. I could be wrong of course. Another question, how customizable are the archetypes? Will two characters of the same archetype feel different, or are the differences too minor to even matter? Barring appearance of course.

Another question, how customizable are the archetypes? Will two characters of the same archetype feel different, or are the differences too minor to even matter? Barring appearance of course. You'll get many opinions on this, but in mine, I'd say no. Archetypes are meant to fulfill a certain role and they're not meant to deviate from that role. Sure, the Grimoire could decide to choose a party heal over a single-target heal, or a Blade could opt for more dodging ability over more DPS, but the bottom line is that such changes are minor. And because Archetypes are not allowed to change Roles, deviating from their assigned purpose is a bad idea. For example, if you're a Blade who wants to do DPS and tank at the same time, you're gonna have a hard time, because his Role is that of the Brawler. The Behemoth, on the other hand, has the Protector Role, which means he is suited for tanking, but if he wants to spec himself for uber DPS, he'll be sorely disappointed because his Role is designed for tanking, not DPS. So in the end, no - there will be minor changes, but for almost all the Achetypes, there are pretty much right and wrong choices on how you can level up. Thus, the only big difference between Archetypes is that one might be good and the other one might not be as good, or even flat-out suck. Because of this, I highly encourage you to check out the guides we've compiled - they detail what we feel are the best choices, so you don't mess up your character.

Another question, how customizable are the archetypes? Will two characters of the same archetype feel different, or are the differences too minor to even matter? Barring appearance of course. It is very possible to make the AT your own, but you do have to make the effort. It is very easy to decide that this AT is a tank, so I must tank with it. But the AT's just arent that restrictive. The Behemoth is perceived of as a tank, and rightly so. But it is quite capable of being a DPS character if you choose. The Glacier is similar to the Behemoth in that regard, but also has alot of crowd control (actually so does the Behemoth). The Marksman is presented as a straight up DPS glass cannon, but can have defenses better than a defensive passive character. Has some of the best AoE crowd control in the game, and still has good damage. Which of those options you choose to focus on is entirely up to you (and you can develop more than one of these possibilities). The Blade can be a pure DPS monster with no defenses whatsoever, can be advantaged for significant damage mitigation (not on a par with a defensive build or the Marksman I admit), or can emphasize stuns and knockdowns to keep groups of foes off balance (I think that this option works best in a team) The Grimoire is an extraordinarily versatile build that can be played in a number of ways. Support, AoE damage, Debuffer. The Mind has some absolutely phenomenal support options, but also has access to some of the best AoE crowd control options in the game. Its pet summons are also capable of being very effective. The soldier is probably the least flexible of the AT's (IMO), but even there I can put together at least two very different builds, both capable of being quite effective (and playing very differently). The Gold AT's are actually more open to varied build options than the Silvers, but I suppose thats warranted since anyone buying them might expect a bit more bang for their buck. In closing let me say that it is very possible to make multiple playable builds with each AT. For some the process is easier than others, but the options are there for each. To get the most out of the AT's you will need to learn the ins and outs of their powers, and the game's mechanics. Some of this can come from reading the wiki, even more from testing things out for yourself. The powerhouse danger room is your friend. I have spent the better part of ten thousand globals on retcons (and some gear) for my main character because I like testing builds with all of the options available on the live server. Ive spent more hours than Id like to admit testing these builds, first in the powerhouse, and then in the field. What this has brought home to me is that sometimes even the smallest of changes in a build can have the most dramatic of impact on how a character plays. I really hope that Cryptic does introduce an unarmed martial arts AT (in fact Ive been playing around testing my own hypothetical version of such). I also hope that you can find something you enjoy in the game until that time. Finally I hope that you, and everyone else out there, realizes that the guides that some members of this community have put together do not in any way represent the only way to build or play the AT's. They are there for those who want some guidance in one way to build/play that we veterans can assure new players will be effective.

Your gonna have to fork over some cash if ya want that right now. But this game is still new with the f2p system. Once the community voices its opinions they will catch on...but then again the only that can actually voice anything on the real forum are people who pay....thats where the flawed system starts lol

I saw an idea by another player in-game, tried it out myself, and thought it interesting enough to share here. You may dislike the following ideas, and I respect that, but it does make for an exotic alternative.
Aside from Behemoth or Blade, Inferno or Glacier provide a more mystical interpretation of martial arts. It's a little bit "Marvel vs. Capcom" fighting game in look & feel, where fighters throw Hadoken Fireballs and the like.
What I discovered was that the basic low-end "energy charger" attacks often look like open-palm punches. They come out relatively fast and you usually use them when the enemy is already in melee range. IMHO, the overall experience feels right.
To give you an idea of the flow, my ice-powered martial artist starts with a long-range ice blast or 2. The enemy charges into close combat, then I switch into these chi-powered open-palm punches to finish him off, mist coming off the attacks like in a HK action flick.
The original source of the idea - my friend and I saw a character named "Scorpion" based on the infamous "Mortal Kombat" fighting game series. We thought he was a Blade, but he starting using fire abilities, which we both felt was even more creative and matched the spirit of the character. We experimented with the Glacier type and thought it more interesting than having only unarmed martial arts (like a Behemoth, which is still cool, but lacks that exotic edge).
