Hi, I've just ordered a PC gamepad (PS3 controller style) as I've been playing with a wireless keyboard & mouse and it's started wigging out lately, generally mid-flight when I'm teamed up.
I'm only playing standard archetypes so shouldn't need as many buttons as freeforms might and it's mostly combat I'll be using it for (BTW I'm a Mind and like to backline heal - don't know how that's gonna work with a controller!?!), fortunately keyboard & mouse will be close to hand for messaging and more ponderous activities like crafting.
I've been looking for guides and advice on which actions to map to which buttons but most seems to be relating to Xbox360 controller support - any advice anyone?

I haven't tried a non-XBox 360 controller with the game. For one, there is a controller support option in the options menu, and that may help. If you find yourself unable to bind your controller to the game controllers, there are a few useful programs out there that may help, like Joy2Key.
Kenpo's a big controller fan, so he may have some advice if you PM him.

First of all, know that I've never played this game with a controller of any type, and haven't even bothered to check how configurable the game's button mapping is. Also, appart from the configuration of the game itself, you've gotta take into account that all controllers are different: different buttons, different feel, different configuration through their drivers...
All of that said, let's just guess your controller has similar buttons to a PS3 controller (2 joystics, up,left, down, right, L1, L2, R1, R2, X, [], ^, O, L3 and R3 on the joysticks themselves, select, start); and that you're able to configure them all independently however you wish, either through the game's configuration, or through your controller's driver binding functions assigned to keyboard letters and combinations.
I'll make a rough map here of the controller's buttons, and will try to advise you in setting them for a comfortable gameplay... If you're left-handed and haven't gotten used to overly right-handed games, you might want to try mirroring these controls.
L1....................................................................R1 L2....................................................................R2 .....U...........................................................^ ....L/R.........Sel..................Start..............[]......O .....D...........................................................X L3....................................................................R3
Moving/looking: Obviously, you'll find most comfortable using both joysticks for this. Set left joystic for moving (WASD), and right joystick for looking. Also, since we're setting your left hand for movement, choose the following: L1: jumping. L2: flying down (or bind to the X key in your keyboard) This will make flying and teleporting around more intuitive.
Arrow keys: I'm not quite sure if the game has this function or not, but... Ideally, your arrow keys should be like this: Up: Target self Left/Right: Target next, prior team member (this is what I'm not sure if it's possible). Down: Action key (Z key in your keyboard: looting, using objects, talking to NPCS...). It needs to be close to your joysticks, because it's a button you'll be pressing often.
I've left the targetting for the arrow keys (and therefore, sacrificed being able to move and target at the same time, to some extent) because you generally won't need to move and heal at the same time: empathic healing simply doesn't favor healing on the move.
Bread and Butter: R1: Empathic Healing. R2: Telekinetic shield (or shift key in your keyboard) I'm placing these two skills here so that you can freely move around or select your target at the same time as you use them: you REALLY don't want to have either of them unactive or cut short just because you're fumbling around with your controls to do something else.
Fight! X: Ego Blast ^: Mindful Reinforcement (You can put Ego Hold until you have it) O: Ego Sprites []: Ego Storm (You can put Ego Sleep until you have it)
Extra: All of this will leave you with four buttons free for useage... My Advise: L3: Travel Power. If you have flight, it's something you'll hardly ever need to press. R3: Teleport: pressing R3 may be bothersome as a spam, but it's pretty easy and simple when needed; plus you don't really lose any mobility from pressing the camera joystick. You may consider putting Psi lash in there until you get teleport. Select: Psi Lash. Start: Either Ego Sleep, Ego Hold, or an item.

Kenpo's a big controller fan, so he may have some advice if you PM him. Yeah - most of the Xbox controller comments I've read came from him! I'll probably hit him up for targetting advice later. Nuzgart - man for someone who's not used a controller themselves that's way above and beyond the call of duty! Big serious thanks for the thought you've put into that! The keymapping software that comes with the pad has got some stunning reviews so I'm hopeful it'll work fine right out of the box. It's a Nyko pad, which I've had stuff from before and trust.

is there a way to set targetting controls like Nuzgart laid out?

The pad arrived in time for bloodmoon so I Thought best play rather than muck about learning how to use-set up pad.
From what I've got working the pad can mimic the keyboard shortcuts and shouldn't have a problem targeting nearest enemy (which means I can heal myself as well) but I'm struggling to find the Nearest Team member keybind.
I've not looked in depth yet though.
I believe I can also set up a Ctrl key so I can access my devices as well but it gets harder to explain there. Will be trying to set this up tonight but it'll be 11pm at least so I might not get far.

You're "target nearest enemy" lets you target yourself? Is this the default or did you modify that binding?
Have you had to use that external software to set keybinds? I can get the basics running just by telling CO that I'm using a gamepad, but I haven't seen anything for setting individual buttons to keybinds.

Sorry, I meant that when I target nearest enemy and hit heal it'll heal me.
I'm using a Nyko Air Flo EX and the software it comes with is frankly brilliant. The software allows the pad to mimic just about anything the keyboard and mouse would do so it can stealth into games that wouldn't necessarily support a gamepad and I was hoping to set it up like that as I've struggled to get the gamepad options working for combined button presses (I haven't spent that much time on it though) however I hit on a problem last night as my PC rebooted 3 times during CO patching so I cut the
Target Team members options for keybind seem limited to target Team mbr 1, 2, 3, 4 and are currently mapped to F2, F3, F4, F5 etc.
Anyway I reckon with a little planning I can get access to all powers, blocks, travel powers, enemy & team targeting, devices and Utility 'powers' and even the Map so it'll just be chatting and a few minor 'would reach for the keyboard anyway' functions I'll be missing.

Your gamepad must have a lot of buttons for you to plan to get all those functions into it!
I ended up looking up gamepad controls on the official forums and found a really good faq that lists all the default mapping. Lb+Rb clears targets and Lt+Rb cycles targets backwards. I'm ok with this scheme, but, I'd rather use the arrow keys.
And that gamepad you described sounds great, especially if you can get the emulation of combined button presses working! So I looked it up, only $13 at amazon.com! Thanks for the info I can't wait to get one!

Personally I swear by the default setup on the 360 controller. The only mapping I've done is mapping the controller buttons to have different functions when the left key on the D-pad is held down. I use that mostly for controling pet special actions.

I use that mostly for controling pet special actions. For the most part I love the default mapping. I just wish it were easier to customize, so I could do targeting how I did in CoH. But besides that, the defaults blows my old setup in CoH out of the water. The use of the trigers and bumpers as modifiers finally gives me access to all of my powers.

Ok had a more serious play with the pad last night and it worked great but with one Major niggle, I play under MMO settings and I suspect that's what's throwing this curveball.
Mapping mouse to Right stick works fine but actually it it's Mouse & Right click to move! D'oh!
Was too tired to try and fix it at the time. However I've seen just how prepared CO is for Xbox controller and a friend reckons he can get me a 3rd party wired one for less that £1.00. I little greedy I know but I reckon I'd be daft not to pick it up.

Be careful with 3rd party 360 controllers on PC. Some work and are detected automatically by games that detect the 360 controller, but some are detected as regular PC gamepads which defeats the purpose.
