I dunno, I like the ATs. I subbed to CO in the 3 months before the transition and went Silver since, but I simply didn't enjoy the freeforms, in part because I enjoy the way ATs have a structured, competently designed role, where I don't have to worry about whether this power works with this power. I never have to worry about screwing myself over with my power choices and having to spend money on a retcon token.
Further, ATs also lend a thematic flair to constructing a character. When an AT is designed with this sort of style in mind, it's easy to find cool characters and costumes to fit the style, rather than having "any character you want" and then simply picking the "best" powers in a freeform because they're better.
Naturally all this is contingent on the idea that Cryptic makes decent ATs (which is a matter of debate), and the option to go Freeform if you want to is great, but classes and defined roles have their place, and I'm glad Cryptic realize that.
At this point the only reason I can think of to go Gold would be that all the ATs are unlocked (so I don't have to spend on trying them out), and power tinting. If Cryptic were to sell a power-tinting/power placement privilege, that would be awesome. Not so awesome for golds, but awesome for me.

All of this makes it sound like FF can't/don't have defined roles, classes or themes.. There is nothing stopping anyone from doing that and a lot of people do exactly that. ATs have zero advantage there and a lot of them aren't terribly useful for the role they are supposed to fill. Yeah, Cryptic making good ATs is a matter of debate with a lot of the vets I know being firmly on the "they don't" side. They make passable ATs. Whether that is due to not really knowing how their game plays or intentionally making them sub-optimal to make certain things in the store more attractive is also up for debate.

I like the ATs too but Behemoth is soooo oldschool! ;D It was one of the first ATs and it feels so outdated meanwhile. I mean compare it with the new Nighthawk AT...
Freeform is cool but you really need to know everything about powers, buffs, passives and whatever!

I love my Behemoth. my only real dislike is the fact it really has just one good AOE, Shockwave, and we don't get that until 40. Yes, I know Roomsweeper is an AOE, but really, what good is a knockback on a melee-only character?

Don´t get me wrong. I love my 2 Behemoths, too! Yes I have two, just to see all of the choosable powers (roomsweeper, thunderclap, haymaker, uppercut)
By the way: Does somebody know when the new ATs will come?
