The big question is, how does this benefit Cryptic?

I can see perhaps adding a mission chain during holiday events that would give you a voucher for one free purchase of holiday items on the C-Store. The vouchers would have to have a time limit on them so people don't stockpile them and defeat the overall purpose of the promotion.
Converting in-game currency into Atari Tokens is a bad idea honestly. Atari Tokens can be used to purchase things on the Star Trek Online version of the C-Store as well. People who also play STO could simply make a free CO account and grind out Tokens to get those special uniforms they've had their eye on.
Or you can throw down $400 for a LTS and get said tokens given to you on a monthly basis.
See how purposes are getting defeated left and right with the idea?

I was thinking that having to spend a significant amount of resources for every Token will still benefit Cryptic. (Like 200 G -> 10 Tokens or whatever)
I dunno, I just wanted to hear what reasons the peeps at the official forums have etc.

It's ~$300 for a LTS but your point still stands. A one time only promotional voucher actually makes a lot of sense.

It has been quite obvious that having people play the game benefits Cryptic. That's the reason of F2P, after all. If the ratio is high, it means they have to play for a very long time to be able to buy any significant amount of Atari Tokens.

So basically, even though Cryptic may not be making money off these people, having them around helps the overall experience of the game for other players. I can see that.

For those of you not following the thread on the official forums, I got feedback saying that it was decided on the Beta boards that the C-Store needs to get expanded before any manner of gaining Atari Tokens in-game is considered.

Not enough to take the CStore for everything it's worth, but maybe enough to snag a costume set or a service once in a great while. It's a slow trickle, but slow trickles are what keep MMOs going. Carrot on a stick. Though, they'd have to keep an eye on the vendor components that you can currently use to "bank" money as items, or they could be bought and sold in a loop.

As long as it takes alot of time/effot to to get anything for "free", alot of people will still choose to just spend real money and buy what they want right away. So I think that having this conversion could benefit Cryptic by making the "let us earn it" crowd happy, and still keeping the "I want it now" crowd spending their money.

So I think that having this conversion could benefit Cryptic by making the "let us earn it" crowd happy, and still keeping the "I want it now" crowd spending their money. There used to be costume pieces that became available for purchase with perk points after grinding out 5000 kills of certain types of mobs. Then suddenly the vast majority of those costume pieces ended up on the C-Store but were still available from the costume vendor for perk points. Cryptic did that to cater to the "I want it now" crowd while still trying to appeal to the "let us earn it" crowd. It didn't go over very well and eventually they scrapped perk points being used as currency and just made perk-unlocked costume pieces available immediately. Now all of those said pieces are either free for Gold or C-Store purchases. The moral of the story is that Cryptic tried to appease both crowds at the same time and the plan fell on it's face. I don't think they have it in them to pull it off in a way that would work.
