This is my current "ideal system", courtesy of the builder at ibuypower.com ...too bad I've got no farking CLUE how I'd get the money for it.
And just for lulz, I went full-hog and did it again with all the best (read: most expensive) options...
I'll accept donations towards the purchase of either machine.

LOL. I went full out with the Alienware creator once. My browser crashed. I assumed it couldn't handle the awesome.

I know they used to be good rigs. Anyway I plan to custom build my next system.

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition A very good CPU. Not the newest, not the current "most powerful", but solidly good. I don't know about that model specifically, byt Gigabyte makes good motherboards in general. Probably not the top-of-the-line examples of RAM. Definitely, just "good enough to get by on" stuff, here. But enough of it, you won't really notice that it's not bleeding-edge stuff. (1333MHz is the lowest speed DDR3 memory is supposed to come in.) Probably, like the RAM, pretty generic representatives of their hardware categories. This'll run hot, but it will handle all those games you listed, easily. The only Xigmatek PSUs rated for 400W I've found are all 80+ Certified, so they definitely aren't junk. CustomisationsGraphics card: NEW! ATI Radeon HD 6790 1GB - Add £8.10 (prefer ATI to Nvidia)[/quote] Worth it. From what I understand, ATI/AMD are the winners in this generation of GPUs. Then, probably worth it. Especially if it's 80+ certified. Sounds like a decent pre-built system you've found, there. FWIW, two (or is it three) years ago I got this computer, and it has: CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 955 "Black Edition" Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P Memory: 8GB DDR3-1333 Video: NVidia GeForce GTX 275 (896MB) HDD: 1TB Hitachi, a budget model but it's worked so far. It's done quite well for me so far, though I've now begun saving for a new PC (in about 2 years, or a bit more). Parts and pieces DO wear out over time, after all ...

Oh, my. Quite late to the party, I see. Ah well.
ETA: also, no clue why it suddenly popped up as having a new post to read. *shrug*

I dont mean to be rude or anything, just a very important pointer:
NEVER EVER be cheap on the PSU, it's the single most critical part in your entire setup. Read up on the minimum wattage required for your graphics card, and add at least150W to make sure that your system runs stable without overheating anything.
I know what I'm talking about, working as a PC-techie a bunch of years, it's almost made me cry while repairing rigs that customers have built (over 6000 computers) themselves with underpowered powersupplys.

My rig is somewhat old and I'm not planning to buy another. Is it possible to play recent games decently with a new video card at a low price (100-120 euros) with my specs, or would that be a waste of money?
Intel Core2 CPU 6420 @ 2.13 Ghz, 2 gb ram, Nvidia Geforce 8500 GT. I'm sadly running Vista.

What's available for 100-120 euros? Can you get a 9800GT or something? That'll be a decent upgrade.
Just checked, an ATI/AMD 6770 might be a good idea.

... NEVER EVER be cheap on the PSU, it's the single most critical part in your entire setup.... I've got a replacement PSU on the way myself. The PC I bought last year had run everything very nicely, but earlier this week while playing APB Reloaded the PSU (500W) died. The cause was almost certainly that it couldn't handle what the graphics card is capable of. For about $90 I got a nice 650W model from NewEgg, rated 80+Gold. I'm not happy about doing the replacement myself, but out here in the sticks, PC support is pretty poor.
