So here's a blast from the past.
Age of Conan technically went F2P a long time ago. The problem was that the model they used was *censored* and nobody wanted to play it because F2P players faced a massive wall of restrictions that made absolutely no sense at all for a game that wanted to be F2P. If you wanted to actually play the game and not just a glorified demo, you had to pony up for the sub fee. So it was really only F2P in name and nobody played it. All those barriers are now gone and the game is finally, truly F2P. I guess all it took for them to change their awful model was having their company staring down the abyss of total annihilation while the debt vultures circled over them waiting to pick apart what was left over after the company was liquidated. But hey, I'm not complaining.

Basically you can now actually play the game as a F2P player now. Before you had to buy passes from the cash shop to run dungeons and raids. Those are gone. You had to pay a sub fee to play in the Rise of the Godslayer areas even if you owned the expansion. That's now gone. As long as you own it you can play it. It also costs like $8 on Amazon now which is great for a B2P expansion.
They also really did give that Dragon Spine pack content pack for free to accounts that paid in the past. I checked my account and it's telling me that the last time I played was in 2009 lol. I still got the whole pack since I played the game back when it was P2P.
To top it off, anyone who logs in before July 13 gets a free chibi cthulu pet as some sort of cross over promo with The Secret World. You don't have to actually play that game or even have an account for it to get the free pet.
I'll be fooling around in AoC again myself since I actually liked the game but hated the *censored* "F2P" model they used. Plus I got some free swag to boot. Not shabby I'd say.

MEMBERSHIP NOT REQUIRED
Experience true freedom to play Age of Conan! We’ve listened to your feedback and made a huge change to the way the game works: Membership is no longer required to enter any area! That’s right--you may now access any area you own, regardless of your membership status. You no longer need to keep buying access passes or membership in order to enter Raids, Unchained Dungeons, or playfields from expansions you already bought.
