(Transcript roundup of information gathered from the San Francisco livestream event over 2.5 hrs watched):
Marvel Universe (official title)
Confirmed Platforms: PC - others TBA (to be announced). Marvel and Secret Identity studios promising a fully Multiplayer AAA quality experience. Subscription plan: Free to Play. (although Bendis joked it would be first-come first-served re: grabbing the most popular characters - So the first player gets Spiderman and so-on, and the rest of you are 'sh*t outta luck').
Release date: At least 1 year away from launch. (They've been working on it a year). Customisation: No comment. Art Style of game: No comment. Client or Browser: Not prepared to talk about technologies at the moment. PvE/PvP?: No comment.
Players will be taking the roles of their favourite Marvel characters. Marvel Universe will launch will the largest selection of playable characters of any Marvel game. A 'Monster list' quote/unquote from the Big players; Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Spider Man and Wolverine to the lesser known characters such as Nova and Squirrel Girl.
In attendance & further information & quotes pulled from:
Ryan Penagos (aka: Agent M - Editorial Director for Marvel.com). TQ Jefferson (VP of Marvel game production). Jeff Lind (Studio Director - Secret Identity Studios). Brian Michael Bendis (Main writer). Andy Colllins (lead story writer for Gazillion).
TQ Jefferson called Bendis and left two words on his voicemail; 'Marvel - MMO'. Bendis called back and said 'Did you say what i think you just said?'.
'The Game' is the MMO story Bendis is currently writing. Main Villain is Dr.Doom. ('They didn't choose Dr.Doom, Dr.Doom chose them').
Marvel would like Comic Universe series to launch with the game. The MMO will be pulling form all source material not just #616 or any one universe.
There will be a nice selection of storylines at launch. (Jeff Lind) Bendis is writing the masterplan story and it will be filtered and developed to fit game working with Andy Collins.
Multiple timespace dimensions to consider / they intend to do the enviroment of New York justice as 'a significant portion of the game happens there'. - (Jeff Lind).
Key locations and events from the Marvel Universe. 'You will be playing those events and creating your own continuity, your own Marvel universe'. - (Bendis)
Its F2P subscription-wise! (Free-to-play). No comment on the retail pricing.(RP: Agent M)
How they plan to monetize on the title: No comment - although it was later commented that 'they feel they can offer really compelling things you will want to buy within the game and there are examples of this happening elsewhere'.
There will eventually be a website but for now information is best served through media; Twittertag; MMMSociety & Secret Identity Studios
Further announcements of more characters and storylines in the next year leading up to launch. - (Bendis).
TQ Jefferson did mention expansion packs, updates and different storylines in rapid succession which I thought interesting.
Both Jeff Lind and Andy Collins mentioned that they were still in the bouncing ideas around stage re: what characters are going to make the playable characters cut from a list of 5000, and what enviroments they want in.
Jeff Lind indicated that Secret Identity Studios considers your time invested in a game to be just as important as any money spent by you on the game. He has heard the fan's criticism that this is not a MMO but more akin to a multiplayer experience, but he says they have some great things coming that he hopes will change peoples perceptions of the game experience in Marvel Universe.
(Initial Impressions);
Personally, I think not going with the traditional MMORPG customisation of having and developing your own character (at least as an option) is a potential mistake and potentially a window of opportunity for other MMOs in the genre to capitalise on. Marvel are playing this as an intentional and positive thing, and something different that will set the game apart, but I think that many aspects that will eventually make up my mind as to whether I'd play it long-term are still missing. Marvel have alluded to new and emerging technologies that will make gameplay different (and indeed possible) notable when a question came up about two players choosing the same character. Until these technologies are announced and a feature-list of sorts starts to trickle through the twittertag feeds its just to soon for me personally to say whether I'd devote any substantial time to it.
I feel that if I played this I wouldn't be treating this as an MMO-experience in my minds eye, and I doubt I would feel as invested in an established Marvel IP character more than an original toon created in CoH, Champions-Online or DC Universe Online. The impression that this will feel like an extended Marvel Ultimate Alliance 'Online' is one that is going to linger until more details are released, but the fact that you will not be crafting your own toon is understandably a deal-killer for many and as I've said, Its one that the existing competition can definately capitalise on.
I think that one thing the competition should be wary of is that it appears Marvel is deadly serious about giving you story in this MMO. The fact that they are taking the cream-of-the-crop from Marvel story-lines such as Secret Invasion, House of M and Ultimate Avengers amongst others will be a major draw for those that can make the leap to playing an established character. The statement from Bendis that said you would be reacting to famous events in your own way and creating your own Marvel continuity is only going to sweeten the deal... If they can make said leap. Champions-Online did have John Layman as a writer, but he left. DC Universe Online has Marv Wolfman, and CoH is doing its own thing with the Praetorian storyline. All of these have you creating your own character and the great investment of time and imagination that that entails for many.
My message to those studios would be to concentrate on story to counter the inevitable big story element incoming in Marvel Universe. Its irrelevant to call this any kind of stay of execution for the competition as it is very clear even at this early stage that Marvel Universe is going to be quite a different animal. There are those that will be debating whether it will be possible to (for example) establish any kind of RP element in the game experience of Marvel Universe, as it appears even at this early stage that it could turnout to be more borderline action MMO and/or multiplayer experience. In a nutshell, the competition should concentrate on writers providing story content from their respective IPs to counter the playing through and creating your own Marvel Universe continuity as personally I think that will be the biggest potential draw.

Damn, that means they must be trying to copy somethign like League of Legends or whatever it is - you know, where you pick from "preselected heroes, for BALANCE and PVP AWESOEMNEZZ!!!"
I highly doubt it's anything else, unless they plan on just using the "play as a character" thing for a PvP mode a la DCUO's Legendary matches. Which sucks, because I like-a my Marvel...

I love comics... Go figure, I spend my free time playing a superhero MMO... But I don't want to play as either Captain America or Squirrel Girl. I want to create my own hero. I want to be the hero of my own story. If this game has no ability to customize your own hero, I'm so very not interested. I'll wait till closer to launch to see what the plans really are but as of right now...
Make mine Champions!

I'd play if I could be some unknown hero and make him really awesome and outperform the "heavy hitters." You know, like the guy playing Iron Man is "so awesome!" and along comes Moonraker (I went to Comic Vine and took an "obscure character" quiz to find one,) and totally shows up Iron Man, Hulk, and Thor in a single shot. The legions of Deadpool at their back don't know if they should make fun of me, make fun of them, or just continue being tools.

Dibs on Squirrel Girl!
But only if she get's an "I win" button involving an army of rabbid squirrels attacking my target. That should also be the only attack, with like 50 different animations.
